Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

These treats are made with just a handful of pantry staples, each contributing something useful to the texture, flavor, or nutrition.

  • Sweet potato gives natural sweetness, moisture, and flavor.
  • Egg provides structure and helps everything hold together.
  • Coconut oil supplies healthy fats and supports the soft and chewy texture.
  • Oat flour creates a gentle, dog-friendly base that bakes well.
  • Old-fashioned oats add texture and extra fiber.
  • Turmeric offers antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Black pepper increases the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

It’s simple to swap a few ingredients depending on what you have or what your dog prefers.

  • Sweet Potato: You can substitute it with unsweetened applesauce, mashed banana, or plain pumpkin puree.
  • Oat Flour: Make it by blending old-fashioned oats until fine. One cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • Other Flours: Rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 mixture of all-purpose and whole wheat flour can be used. Whole wheat flour alone is too dense. Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture.

Equipment Needed

You’ll need basic kitchen items for making the dough. For baking, any silicone baking mold will work for shaping the treats. Paw and bone-shaped molds make them extra cute.

How to Make Turmeric Dog Treats

These treats come together easily and bake into soft, chewy bites your dog will love. Here’s what to do:

  1. Prepare the sweet potato by boiling peeled cubes until tender or baking a whole sweet potato until soft. Mash and cool to room temperature.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F and place silicone molds on a baking sheet for stability.
  3. Stir together the mashed sweet potato, egg, and coconut oil until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, stir or whisk the oat flour, oats, turmeric, and black pepper.
  5. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and combine until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Spoon or press the dough into the molds.
  7. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes. Allow the treats to cool completely before removing them from the molds.

Recipe Tip

For crunchier treats, place the baked treats on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake at 200°F until drier and crisp, about 20-30 minutes. This also increases shelf life and allows for storing at room temperature.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

For longer storage, place them in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes, they sure can. All the ingredients are safe for people. Give one a taste, and you may enjoy it.

I made a double recipe of these and they turned out great. I did substitute pumpkin for sweet potato. I seem to always be out of one thing or another, but I just search through all your wonderful recipes and I come up with one that matches my available ingredients. Also its so helpful that you always list substitutes . Any way …. The treats were well received, she licked the crumbs from the floor. This is one of the several recipes I’ve tried and they all have turned out wonderful. I now come right to your site when I’m going to make dog treats, so many options and I trust all your recipes.

Thank you for your kind words! I love hearing how you make the recipes work with what you have, and pumpkin is a perfect substitute. The image of her licking up the crumbs made me smile. It truly means so much to know you come back to the site and trust the recipes.
