Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Each ingredient adds nutrition and flavor your pup will love. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pumpkin Puree: A good source of fiber, which aids in digestion, and is loaded with vitamins A, C, and E, supporting your dog’s overall immune health.
  • Cinnamon: Contains antioxidants that help fight inflammation and support brain function, and it can also help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can help soothe upset stomachs and improve digestion.
  • Honey: A natural sweetener that provides a boost of energy and contains antioxidants, which support your dog’s immune system.
  • Coconut Milk: Provides healthy fats that can improve skin and coat health, and it’s also a good source of vitamins and minerals like manganese and copper.
  • Oat Flour: A gluten-free option that’s easy to digest and packed with fiber, which can help maintain a healthy digestive system.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

Avoid pumpkin pie mix, which may contain nutmeg and other spices that are toxic to dogs.

You can use store-bought pumpkin purée or make your own using this homemade pumpkin puree for dogs.

Substitute pumpkin with plain cooked mashed potato or butternut squash if needed.

Almond milk can be swapped with carton coconut milk (not canned).

Make oat flour by blending old-fashioned rolled oats in a food processor until fine. One cup of oats yields about ¾ cup of flour.

You can also use brown rice flour, which you can make by blending uncooked brown rice.

Oat flour can be substituted with all-purpose flour or a 50-50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Don’t use only whole wheat flour because it’s too dense for this recipe.

Equipment Needed

You don’t need any special equipment to make the treats. You can use any cookie cutter, but pumpkin cookie cutters or paw and bone shaped cookie cutters make cute treats for the season.

How to Make Pumpkin Spice Dog Treats

These pumpkin spice dog cookies are simple to make and smell amazing while they bake! Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the oat flour, cinnamon, and ground ginger.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together the pumpkin purée and maple syrup until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture and almond milk to the wet ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
  5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick.
  6. Use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out the treats. Re-roll and cut scraps as needed.
  7. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes.
  8. Let the treats cool completely on the baking sheet before serving or storing.

For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Oh yes, they sure can! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re perfect for people who enjoy less-sweet snacks or are cutting back on sugar. Give one a try and you might be surprised how tasty they are!
