Ingredients and What They Bring to the Gummy Bears

It only takes three basic ingredients to make these fun treats. The fruit changes with each flavor, but the simple gummy base stays the same. This is what you’ll need:

  • Fruit – Gives the gummy bears their natural color and flavor along with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
  • Unflavored Gelatin – Helps the liquid mixture set and gives the treats their firm, squishy gummy texture.
  • Water – Helps puree the fruit and dissolves the gelatin so everything combines smoothly.

Ingredient Notes

With such a short ingredient list, there are just a few things to keep in mind when choosing the ingredients for these dog gummy bears.

Fruit

Mango, blueberries, and watermelon make a colorful assortment, but you don’t have to stick with these three flavors. You can use any fruit dogs can eat to create different flavors.

Always prepare the fruit appropriately before using it. Remove pits, seeds, cores, rinds, and any other parts that aren’t safe for dogs.

Gelatin

Be sure to use plain, unflavored gelatin without added sugar, artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors.

Gelatin is a protein made from collagen and contains amino acids, including glycine and proline. Its main purpose in this recipe is to turn the fruit mixture into firm, squishy gummies.

Equipment Needed

You probably already have most of the kitchen equipment you’ll need, including a knife, cutting board, blender, saucepan, and whisk.

The specialty item you’ll need is a silicone candy mold. Use 1-inch silicone gummy bear molds to make the adorable little bears.

How to Make Gummy Bears for Dogs

The process is the same for each flavor, so once you’ve made the first batch, you’ve got the hang of it. Prepare each fruit separately to keep the colors and flavors distinct. This is what to do:

  1. If using frozen fruit, thaw it first. Wash, peel, seed, and cut the fruit as needed.
  2. Place one type of fruit in a blender.
  3. Add enough water to puree the fruit smoothly and bring the total blended mixture to ½ cup.
  4. Bring ¼ cup of water to a boil in a small saucepan.
  5. Add one packet of unflavored gelatin and whisk until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  7. Add the blended fruit and stir until thoroughly combined.
  8. Place the silicone gummy bear molds on a baking sheet for stability.
  9. Carefully pour or spoon the mixture into the molds.
  10. Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours, or until the gummy bears are completely set and firm.
  11. Remove the gummy bears from the molds and serve or refrigerate until ready to serve.
  12. Repeat the process with the remaining fruit flavors.

For Firmer Gummies

If you prefer a firmer gummy bear dog treat, place the unmolded gummies on parchment paper in a single layer. Refrigerate them uncovered for an additional 12 to 24 hours. This helps dry the surface and gives the gummies a firmer texture.

How to Store the Gummy Bears and How Long They Last

Store the gummy bears in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last for 5 to 7 days.

For longer storage, place them in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag and freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw them in the refrigerator before serving.

Tip: To keep the gummy bears from sticking together, lightly toss them with a small amount of cornstarch or arrowroot powder before storing.

Can people eat these gummy bears?

Yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re great for kids of all ages. Give one a try and see if you like it.
