Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s nothing quite like treating your dog to something homemade and seeing them light up with excitement. There are so many reasons this recipe will become a go-to favorite:

Wholesome Ingredients – You’ll feel good knowing every ingredient is real, simple, and pup-approved.

Easy to Make – These treats come together just like cookies: mix, roll, cut, and bake. Done!

Simple to Customize – Adjust the flour, swap the nut butter, or cut them into any shape your pup loves. Easy to tailor to your dog’s taste or dietary needs.

Economical – Why spend a fortune on store-bought treats when you can make a batch at home for a fraction of the price?

Superfood Boost – Spirulina is a nutrient-rich algae loaded with protein, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory benefits. A little goes a long way!

Perfect for Holidays – That deep green color makes these treats a fun and festive way to include your pup in your Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations!

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Here’s what you’ll need to make these bright green goodies and why each one is great for your pup:

  • Oat Flour – A gentle, gluten-free flour that provides structure and fiber.
  • Spirulina Powder – A vibrant green superfood loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Peanut Butter – Adds flavor and richness that dogs adore.
  • Egg – Helps bind everything together for easy dough handling.
  • Water – Adds moisture to bring the dough to a rollable consistency.

A Quick Note About Spirulina Staining

Spirulina is a natural dye, and it will leave its mark. That gorgeous green powder can easily stain anything it touches. So when it’s time to clean up, stick with paper products or use kitchen towels you don’t mind getting a little green. And heads up: the treats might stain furniture or rugs if your dog eats directly on them.

Also, don’t be alarmed if your pup’s poop looks green afterward. It’s totally normal and just a sign that spirulina did its thing!

Ingredient Notes And Substitutions

When making these treats, here are a few things to keep in mind and simple swaps if you need them:

  • Peanut butter – Make sure it does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Nut butter alternatives – You can use almond butter or sunflower seed butter (again, make sure they’re xylitol-free).
  • Oat flour – You can make your own by blending old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender until fine. One cup of oats or rice makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • Flour substitutes – Rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 combo of all-purpose and whole wheat flour works well. Avoid using only whole wheat (it’s too dense). And skip coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture and throws off the texture.

Equipment Needed

You probably already have everything you need to make these treats. You can use any cookie cutter, but paw-shaped cookie cutters make them extra cute.

How To Make Spirulina Dog Treats

These treats come together quickly and bake up just like cookies. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the oat flour and spirulina powder.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the egg and peanut butter until smooth.
  4. Add the peanut butter mixture to the flour and spirulina. Stir until combined.
  5. Add water as needed to bring the dough together and make it rollable.
  6. Roll the dough out on parchment paper to about ¼ inch thick.
  7. Use cookie cutters to cut out as many treats as possible. Gather the scraps, re-roll, and cut again.
  8. Place the cutouts on the lined baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 15–18 minutes.
  10. Allow the treats to cool completely on the baking sheet before storing or serving.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Once cooled, store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or bag. They’ll last up to 3 months. You can let them thaw at room temperature before serving.

Can people eat these treats?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Give one a try and you may like it. They’re just not sweet like people cookies.
