Why You Will Love This Recipe

Making homemade treats for your dog is always a happy moment, and it’s even better when they hover nearby, clearly excited about what’s coming out of the oven. There are so many reasons this recipe will be a favorite.

Easy to Make – These treats come together just like making cookies. Mix the dough, roll it out, cut shapes, and bake.

Wholesome Ingredients – They’re made with simple, dog-safe, and nutritious ingredients you can feel good about giving your dog.

Calming Chamomile – Chamomile is known for its calming properties. It contains apigenin, which binds to receptors in the brain that help reduce stress, fear, and hyperactivity.

Saves Money – Homemade treats are much less expensive than specialty store-bought calming treats.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Each ingredient helps create crunchy treats with gentle flavor and structure.

  • Chamomile tea adds calming properties and a light herbal flavor.
  • Egg adds protein and helps bind the dough.
  • Coconut oil adds richness and helps the treats bake evenly.
  • Old-fashioned oats add texture and gentle fiber.
  • Oat flour forms the base of the dough and creates crunchy biscuits.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is easy to adapt with a few simple swaps.

  • Oat flour can be made by blending old-fashioned rolled oats until they reach a flour consistency. One cup of oats makes about three-fourths cup of flour.
  • Brown rice flour can be substituted for oat flour and made by blending uncooked brown rice.
  • All-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour can replace oat flour. Whole wheat flour alone is too dense to use by itself.
  • Flour substitutions may affect the dough. Start with less and add more as needed to create a rollable dough.

Equipment Needed

You likely already have everything you need to make these treats. Any cookie cutter will work, but a paw-shaped cutter makes them extra cute.

How to Make Chamomile Dog Treats

These crunchy treats are easy to make with just a few steps. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
  2. Bring the water to a boil, remove it from the heat, and steep the chamomile tea bag for 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag and allow the tea to cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the oat flour and oats. Stir to mix.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the egg, melted coconut oil, and cooled chamomile tea. Stir until smooth.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  6. Roll the dough out on a flat surface and cut shapes using a cookie cutter.
  7. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 20 to 24 minutes.
  9. Allow the treats to cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature or about 1 week in the refrigerator.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes, they sure can. All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Give one a try and see what you think.
