Why Make Fried Rice for Dogs

If you have ever made yourself friend rice and watched your fur baby beg for a bite, you know the struggle!

Fried rice for humans contains ingredients that are harmful or toxic to dogs. Soy sauce and oyster sauce are too salty. Onions and green onions (spring onions) are toxic. Often chicken broth is added for moisture and it can contain onions or harmful spices.

So, the answer to that struggle is to make them their own fried rice. Then, you can eat this delicious dish together. It’s made with all-natural ingredients that are safe for pet parents to share with their dogs.

Why You’ll Love This Fried Rice Recipe

You’ll feel good making this fried rice for your dog. The ingredients are simple and you probably already have them in your refrigerator or freezer.

And since it’s such a simple recipe, you can whip it up without much thought, right along with your own meal.

It’s also nutritious for your dog, too. While you will feel like you’re treating your dog, you’re actually making something that’s good for them too.

Ingredients

Here’s a list of the ingredients you’ll need to make the recipe. Exact measurements can be found in the printable recipe card below.

  • Cooked White Rice – The base of the dish!
  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast – Lean protein
  • Olive Oil – Healthy fat
  • Frozen Peas and Carrots – For vegetable nutrients and fiber.
  • Egg – Another source of protein, essential fatty acids, and beneficial nutrients.

Ingredient Substitutions

You can easily customize this dish to fit your dog’s preferences or special dietary needs. Here are some ideas:

  • You can use beef, lamb, or turkey instead of chicken.
  • You can use ground meat instead of chopped.
  • You can use seafood such as salmon or other fish safe for dogs.
  • You can use white or brown rice. Use plain rice made without any salt or seasonings.
  • You can use coconut oil or sesame oil instead of olive oil.
  • You can use any vegetables safe for dogs. If you use sweet potato you will need to cook it first because dogs should not eat raw sweet potato.

How to Make Fried Rice for Dogs

These are the steps and some photos of making the recipe. I hope they help you make this fried rice for your dog.

  1. Cut the chicken breast into small pieces.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add chicken to the pan and cook for about 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.
  3. Add the rice and frozen vegetables to the skillet. Stir fry for 3-5 minutes or until heated through.

  2. Once the egg is scrambled, stir to combine it with the chicken and veggie mixture.
  3. Cook it for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Allow the fried rice to cool to room temperature before serving it.

Serving Size

The recipe makes enough that could be a meal for a medium-sized dog. However, serving sizes may vary based on your dog’s size, age, and activity level. For smaller dogs, a portion of the rice may suffice, while larger breeds might require a bit more. It’s important to adjust portions accordingly and consider this meal as part of your dog’s daily caloric intake.

When introducing any new food to your dog’s diet, it’s crucial to start with small amounts. Even though this recipe is made with dog-friendly ingredients, every dog reacts differently to new foods. Begin by offering a small portion and observing how your dog tolerates it. If there are no adverse reactions, digestive issues, or upset stomach, you can gradually increase the serving size.

Seek immediate veterinary attention if you see any signs of an adverse reaction.

Always consider your dog’s overall health and dietary needs. If your dog has specific dietary restrictions or health concerns, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian before introducing homemade meals. They can provide personalized advice based on your dog’s individual health status and nutritional requirements.

How to Store Leftovers

Store any leftover rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last up to 4 days.

For longer storage, you can freeze it in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag. It will last up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

The leftovers do not need to be reheated before giving it to your dog. However, if you want to warm it up, you can microwave it in 20-second increments until slightly warmed (like room temperature) and not hot.

Can people eat this fried rice for dogs?

Yes, they sure can! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Note that it will be bland because it doesn’t have the usual soy sauce and other seasonings. It would be great for anyone watching their sodium intake.

How long do your recipes last in the fridge and freezer?
I’m assuming 5 days fridge, 3 months freezer?
I also have the same question for the treats.
    Thank you

As a general rule homemade dog food lasts 4-5 days in the fridge and 3 months in the freezer. Likewise for homemade dog treats, but some treats can last a little longer depending on the ingredients.
