Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this pizza, here are some tips and easy swaps:

  • Chicken Broth: Always use broth without onions or garlic. You can buy dog-safe bone broth or make your own: Bone Broth for Dogs
  • Sauce: Substitute sweet potato with butternut squash or plain pumpkin puree.
  • Meat: Use cooked turkey, ground turkey, or lean ground beef instead of chicken. Avoid processed meats like pepperoni or ham.
  • Veggies: Swap in other dog-safe vegetables (see the list here: Vegetables Dogs Can Eat).
  • Cheese: Omit if your dog is lactose intolerant.
  • Flour: Make oat flour by blending rolled oats into a fine powder. One cup of oats yields about 3/4 cup of flour.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 cups Oat Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Flaxseed Meal
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Herb Seasoning Blend (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Melted Coconut Oil
  • ¼ – ½ cup Chicken Broth without onions or garlic

Sauce

  • 1 large Sweet Potato
  • 1/4 cup Chicken Broth without onions or garlic

Toppings

  • ½ Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast about 4 ounces
  • ½ cup Shredded Low-Fat Mozzarella Cheese
  • ¼ cup Sliced Carrot
  • ¼ cup Chopped Broccoli
  • ¼ cup Chopped Cauliflower
  • ¼ cup Green Beans

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Crust

  • Mix together the dry ingredients (oat flour, flaxseed meal, and herb seasoning).
  • Add the egg, coconut oil, and chicken broth. Combine well. You may need more or less broth, based on the dryness of your dough.
  • Place the dough on parchment paper and roll it out to about a 10-inch round or desired shape.
  • Place the parchment paper with the crust on it on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 12 minutes.

Sauce

  • Peel and chop the sweet potato into ½-inch chunks.
  • Boil the sweet potato until tender and easily mashes with a fork, about 20 minutes. Drain and place the cooked sweet potato in a bowl.
  • Mash the boiled sweet potato with a fork.
  • Add a small amount of chicken broth, continuing to mix it together and add more as needed until the mixture has the consistency of a thick sauce.
  • Spread the sauce on the cooked crust.

Toppings

  • Boil the chicken breast in water until done.
  • Use forks to shred the chicken or cut the chicken into small pieces.
  • Scatter the cheese, vegetables, and chicken on top of the sauce.
  • Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Cool the pizza to room temperature.
  • Slice the pizza.

Notes

Instead of boiling, you can cook the sweet potato in the oven or microwave. Remove the skin and mash the flesh with a fork.
You can use any dog-safe vegetables for the toppings. Do not use garlic, onion, or tomato.
