Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

There’s something extra rewarding about making homemade dog treats, especially when they’re as pretty as they are nutritious! Here are the top reasons why this will be a go-to recipe:

Wholesome Ingredients – These treats are made with real, simple ingredients like fresh beets, oat flour, egg, and coconut oil. There are no preservatives, salt, or added sugar.

Easy to Make – Boil and puree the beets, mix them up with the rest of the ingredients, press into silicone molds, and bake. That’s it! No rolling and cutting like with cookies.

Perfect for Holidays – The natural red-pink color makes these perfect Valentine’s Day dog treats, but you can use different shaped molds to make them great for Christmas, Easter, birthdays, or any day you want to show your pup some extra love.

Festive, Fun, and Full of Flavor – Dogs love the earthy, subtly sweet flavor of beets! Plus, they look so cute when molded into bone, paw, heart, or other festive shapes.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Here’s a quick look at what goes into these homemade beetroot dog biscuits and why each ingredient is a win for your pup:

  • Fresh Beets (Beetroot) – The star of the show! Beets add color, fiber, and a boost of vitamins and minerals. See more info below.
  • Water – Used for boiling the beets until tender.
  • Egg – Helps bind the dough and adds a bit of protein.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, gluten-free flour that’s easy on doggy tummies.
  • Baking Soda – Gives the treats a little lift.
  • Coconut Oil – A healthy fat that helps bind the dough.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are a few important things to keep in mind, and a couple of easy swaps you can make if needed:

  • Canned Beets – You can use canned beets instead of fresh ones as long as they don’t contain salt, sugar, or other additives. Check the label, the ingredients should be just beets and water.
  • Baking Soda – Yes, it’s safe for dogs in small quantities. Source
  • Homemade Oat Flour – Make your own by blending old-fashioned oats in a blender or food processor until fine. 1 cup of oats = about ¾ cup flour.
  • Other Flours – You can substitute brown rice flour (blend uncooked brown rice to make your own), or a combo of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Avoid using only whole wheat because it’s too dense and will change the texture.

Recipe Tip for Success

Sometimes beet dog treats turn brown in the oven instead of keeping their bright pink-red color. Want to preserve that pretty hue? Try this:

  • Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the water when boiling the beets.
  • You can also swap the teaspoon of baking soda for 2 teaspoons of baking powder and add ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the puree.

Equipment Needed

You likely have everything you need in your kitchen. Any silicone baking mold will work, but here are a few that make the treats extra fun and festive:

  • Dog paw and bone molds – great for anytime
  • Heart molds – perfect for Valentine’s Day
  • Christmas tree molds – fun for holiday gifts
  • Egg and bunny molds – great for Easter

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, place in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 4 months. Thaw before serving or give them as a frozen treat.

Can people eat these treats?

Yep! These beet dog treats are made with human-safe ingredients. If you’re a fan of beets, go ahead and give one a try.

Benefits of Beets for Dogs

Beets are more than just a pretty color, they’re also packed with nutrients that can benefit your dog in small amounts:

  • Vitamin C and Folate – support immune health and cell repair
  • Potassium and Magnesium – great for heart and muscle function
  • Fiber – helps with digestion
  • Betalains – powerful antioxidants that fight inflammation

Important note: Beets are high in oxalic acid, which can contribute to the formation of bladder or kidney stones. If your dog is prone to urinary issues, it’s best to skip the beets.

The treats turning brown is something that can happen when using beets. You can try adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the water when you are boiling them. You can also substitute the teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of baking powder and add 1/2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the beets when pureeing them.

I haven’t tried and tested it but it may be possible. Mix 3 tablespoons of beet powder with enough water to make 1 1/2 cups. Use that instead of the beet puree. If you do, be sure to come back and let me know how it turned out.
