Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

You might not like to eat liver, but this creamy recipe is perfect for your fur baby. Here are some of the best things about it:

Easy to Make: With just a few steps, you’ll have a homemade treat that’s fresh and wholesome. No culinary degree required!

Lickable Delight: Perfect for picky eaters, this smooth pâté can be spoon-fed, spread, or squeezed into your dog’s bowl or onto a lick mat for extra fun.

Great for Pills: Disguise those not-so-fun meds by tucking them into a dollop of this pâté. Your pup won’t even notice.

A Little Goes a Long Way: Packed with flavor and nutrients, this pâté is satisfying even in small servings.

Benefits of Liver for Dogs

Liver is a powerhouse of nutrients for dogs. It’s packed with protein, iron, and essential vitamins like A, B12, and folate, supporting everything from energy levels to a healthy coat. A small amount can go a long way in boosting your dog’s overall health!

Important Note About Dogs Eating Liver

As amazing as liver is, it’s important to serve it in moderation. Too much can lead to vitamin A toxicity, which is harmful to dogs. Stick to the recommended serving sizes below to keep your pup happy and healthy.

Ingredients

This liver pâté comes together with just five wholesome ingredients:

  • Chicken Liver: Mild and nutrient-rich, perfect for your dog’s palate.
  • Water: For cooking the livers and achieving the right pâté texture.
  • Sweet Potato: Adds a hint of sweetness and extra fiber.
  • Fresh Rosemary: A fragrant herb that’s safe and flavorful for dogs.
  • Curly Parsley: Helps freshen breath and support digestion.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

You can switch things up based on what’s available or your dog’s preferences:

Swap chicken liver for beef, lamb, venison, turkey, duck, or goat liver. Larger livers may need to be chopped into smaller pieces for easier cooking.

Substitute plain pumpkin puree or butternut squash for the sweet potato. Do not use pumpkin pie mix because it may contain spices that are toxic to dogs.

How to Make Liver Pâté for Dogs

Making this pâté is super simple! Here’s what to do:

  1. Simmer chicken livers in water until fully cooked. Remove them from the water and reserve the cooking liquid for later. Cool both to room temperature.
  2. Peel the sweet potato, boil it, mash it, and let it cool.
  3. Combine the liver, sweet potato, herbs, and some cooking liquid in a food processor. Blend until smooth, adding more liquid as needed.
  4. Transfer the pâté to an airtight container or squeeze bottle.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken liver
  • water
  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon fresh curly parsley

Instructions

  • Place the chicken livers in a skillet or saucepan and add enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer for 10-15 minutes or until they are no longer pink in the center and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and use a slotted spoon or spider strainer to remove the livers from the pan. Reserve the liquid. Allow the livers and liquid to cool to room temperature.
  • Peel, chop and boil the sweet potato until fork-tender. Drain the sweet potato and allow to cool. Use a fork to mash the sweet potato.
  • Add the cooled liver, 1 cup of mashed sweet potato, rosemary, parsley, and about ¼ cup of the cooking liquid to a food processor or blender. Process, adding more cooking liquid as needed, until it reaches a spreadable or squeezable paste consistency. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container or squeeze bottle.
  • Store pate in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze it for up to 3 months.

Notes

This recipe makes about 2 cups of pate.

My dog is allergic to chicken. How should I cook beef liver for this recipe?

You would cut the beef liver into smaller pieces, like 1-inch cubes. Then cook it the same way as chicken livers.
