Are dog biscuits good for dogs?

These homemade ones are! There are many health benefits to making dog biscuits with wholesome ingredients. There are no mystery ingredients like some found in many commercial store-bought biscuits.

These baked dog biscuits have a crunchy texture that is good for your dog’s teeth. They are full of wholesome ingredients that will help your dog maintain a healthy weight too.

Benefits of Peanut Butter for Dogs

Peanut butter is high in protein which is essential in a dog’s diet. It helps with building and repairing muscle.

Peanut butter has healthy fats that are important for a dog’s skin, maintaining it and improving dry coats or irritated skin.

Peanut butter is a good source of nutrients including magnesium for helping cells metabolize B complex vitamins and folic acid for cell growth.

Ingredients

The entire list of ingredients, quantities of each, and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I want to share a bit more information about the ingredients I used.

  • Peanut Butter – Use natural creamy peanut butter without added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
  • Applesauce – Use unsweetened applesauce or make your own by microwaving a few slices of apples with a little bit of water.
  • Egg – This is an emulsifier, which means it holds all the ingredients together. It also gives these simple dog treats a boost in protein.
  • Coconut Oil – Melt the coconut oil before you use it. This will give the biscuits some healthy fats.
  • Oat Flour – Either buy it or make your own with oatmeal and a food processor.

If you want to make organic dog biscuits, make sure you use organic ingredients.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this easy recipe for doggie biscuits, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Use unsweetened natural peanut butter. Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol because it is toxic to dogs.

You can make your own oat flour by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats in a food processor and processing until the ground oats have a flour consistency.

You can substitute brown rice flour for oat flour. You can make your own brown rice flour by placing uncooked brown rice in a blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.

If you use any other type of flour such as coconut flour, all-purpose flour, or whole wheat flour, the end results may vary due to the difference in the flours. They will not be gluten-free if using flour made from wheat.

To make dog biscuits with pumpkin, substitute the applesauce with plain pumpkin puree. Do not use pumpkin pie filling because it may contain spices toxic to dogs.

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these peanut butter biscuits for dogs. You can use any cookie cutter of your choice.

  • Measuring Cups

  1. Place the applesauce, coconut oil, egg, and peanut butter in a large bowl.

  3. Add the oat flour to the wet ingredient mixture.
  4. Blend well using a hand mixer, a spoon, or your hands.
  5. Refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
  6. Place the dough on a flat surface.

  10. Place the cutouts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  12. Place the baked treats on a wire rack to cool to room temperature.

The number of dog biscuits this recipe makes depends on the size of your cookie cutter. A 4-inch cookie cutter like I used yields 8 large dog biscuits.

Serving Size

How many homemade dog treats should you give to your canine companions? That depends on what else they ate that day because you need to consider their entire calorie intake as a whole. Being mindful of a dog’s food consumption is just as important as it is with a human family member.

It also depends on the size of your dog. Small dogs need fewer calories than larger dogs. Maintaining a dog’s healthy weight is important so keep that in mind when feeding your dog biscuits in addition to their regular food.

Dogs also shouldn’t overeat too many carbs, including healthy homemade dog biscuits. For this reason, I suggest only giving your pup one biscuit per day.

How to Store the Biscuits and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature or 1 week in the fridge.

For more extended storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw them at room temperature or give them as a frozen treat.

Can humans eat dog biscuits?

They sure can eat these homemade ones! Everything in these dog biscuits is safe for human consumption. However, I doubt folks would like them since they are not sweet. I suggest making some peanut butter cookies for people.

2 tablespoons of dried whole egg mixed with 2¼ tablespoons of water will make the equivalent of 1 large egg.

Is there anything I can replace the applesauce with. I don’t have any at home and I can’t go to the shops.

You can substitute the applesauce with pumpkin puree, mashed banana, other pureed fruit that is safe for dogs.

Very easy recipe. I didn’t use a mold or roll out the dough. I just dropped spoonfuls on the baking sheet and baked. They’re not pretty, but my dogs don’t care. I cut the cookies in half or fourths and use these as treats. I raise Kangal dogs so am always looking for new treats. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

Beef tallow would be a great substitute for coconut oil.

I have buttermilk I would like to use up. Could I use that instead of water?

That’s a great question! This recipe doesn’t include water, so you don’t need to substitute it with anything. The applesauce already provides the moisture for the dough. Using buttermilk would make the texture different, so it’s best to stick with the recipe as written for these biscuits.
