Make some treats that are almost as sweet as your dog! These Homemade Honey Dog Treats are not only delicious but also packed with wholesome ingredients like banana, peanut butter, and oat flour.

They’re perfect for spoiling your furry friend with something special.

Why You and Your Dog Will Love These Treats

As a proud dog mom to three spoiled hounds, I know the pull between wanting to pamper my pups and still watch their nutrition.

These peanut butter and honey dog treats are the perfect way to treat your furry friend while keeping things nutritious. Honey adds a natural touch of sweetness, while peanut butter provides a rich, nutty flavor that dogs can’t resist.

These treats are easy to make with just a few simple ingredients. There is no fancy equipment or complicated steps required! Just mix, roll, cut, and bake.

They’re gentle on digestion thanks to the use of oat flour, which is naturally gluten-free and easier on sensitive stomachs compared to wheat-based flours.

And let’s not forget they’re made with love! When you bake homemade treats, you know exactly what’s going into them, making them a healthier alternative to store-bought options.

Benefits of Honey for Dogs

Honey isn’t just a tasty treat; it also has some health benefits for your pup. It’s a natural energy booster, providing a quick source of carbohydrates for active dogs. It also contains antioxidants and antibacterial properties, which can help support overall health.

Some pet owners even use local honey to help dogs with seasonal allergies! Just remember that honey should always be given in moderation due to its natural sugar content.

Ingredients

These simple, dog-friendly ingredients come together to create a delicious and nutritious treat for your pup. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Honey – The star of the treats!
  • Natural Peanut Butter – A tasty and protein-rich ingredient that dogs love.
  • Banana – Naturally sweet and packed with fiber, potassium, and vitamins.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, gluten-free alternative to wheat flour that’s easy on digestion.
  • Baking Powder – Helps give the treats a little rise for the perfect texture.
  • Egg – Helps bind the ingredients together while adding protein.
  • Water (if needed) – Just a little to help bring the dough together if it’s too dry.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Here’s a bit more information about what I used, how safe it is for dogs, and any substitutes you can make.

When making these treats, always check that your peanut butter does not contain xylitol, as this artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs. Stick to natural peanut butter with just peanuts.

A small amount of baking powder is safe for dogs.

If your pup has a peanut allergy or you prefer an alternative, you can swap peanut butter for almond butter or sunflower seed butter; just make sure it’s xylitol-free!

No banana? No problem! You can substitute ½ cup of unsweetened applesauce or plain pumpkin puree for a similar texture and mild sweetness.

You can make your own oat flour by blending old-fashioned oats in a food processor until they reach a flour-like consistency. One cup of oats makes about ¾ cup of oat flour.

If you prefer, you can use all-purpose flour or a 50-50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour instead of oat flour. However, whole wheat flour can be dense on its own, so it’s best to mix it with another flour. Avoid coconut flour, as it absorbs too much moisture and will throw off the recipe.

How to Make Honey Dog Treats

Making these treats is super simple! Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the oat flour and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, mash the banana until smooth. Add the egg, peanut butter, and honey, stirring until well combined.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, stirring until a rollable dough forms. If the dough feels too dry, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time, until it comes together.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/4″ – 1/3″ thick.
  6. Cut out shapes using a cookie cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather the scraps, reroll, and cut until all the dough is used.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the treats are lightly golden and firm.
  8. Let the treats cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.

Serving Size

How many treats should you give your pup? It depends on their size, activity level, and overall diet. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain a balanced diet.

To start, offer your dog one treat and monitor for any reactions to new ingredients. If all goes well, these can be an occasional snack. When in doubt, check with your vet for portion recommendations.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature or 1 week in the fridge.

For more extended storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw them at room temperature or give them as a frozen treat.

Can People Eat These Treats?

Yes! These treats are made with wholesome, human-friendly ingredients, so if you enjoy simple cookies with honey, go ahead and give one a try. They aren’t super sweet like regular cookies but they make a fiber-packed snack!
