Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

Homemade treats are a great way to show your pup some extra love. And when they taste this good, you’ll want to make them on repeat!

They’re made with real peanut butter and banana. Two dog favorites in one treat? Yes, please. This combo smells amazing and tastes even better (according to all the enthusiastic taste-testers!).

They’re easy to make. Toss everything into a bowl, roll out the dough, cut into shapes, and bake. No fancy steps required.

They’re nice and crunchy. Great for dogs who love a satisfying biscuit-like bite and a little extra chew time.

They freeze beautifully. Make a batch and keep some in the freezer for later. You’ll always have a treat on hand when your pup deserves a little extra love (so… basically all the time).

They’re full of fiber and healthy fats. Oats, flax, and banana bring more than just flavor, they’re nutritious too!

Ingredients

These dog treats use a handful of simple ingredients that are easy to find and good for your pup. Here’s what goes into them:

  • Old-fashioned rolled oats – A wholesome base full of fiber. These get ground into flour for the perfect dough texture.
  • Whole wheat flour – Adds structure and a slightly nutty flavor.
  • Egg – Binds everything together and adds protein.
  • Peanut butter – A classic dog favorite that brings creaminess and healthy fats.
  • Bananas – Naturally sweet and full of nutrients like potassium and vitamin B6.
  • Cinnamon – Just a little for flavor – it pairs perfectly with banana.
  • Ground flaxseed – Adds omega-3s and fiber for a nutritious boost.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is super flexible, so feel free to make some swaps to suit your pup’s needs or what you have on hand!

First things first, make sure your peanut butter does not contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Always check the label!

You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter, as long as they’re unsweetened and xylitol-free.

If you’re out of bananas, you can swap in unsweetened applesauce. It still gives a little natural sweetness and moisture.

No flaxseed? No problem! You can use ground chia seeds instead.

And if you don’t feel like blending oats into flour, just use 1½ cups of oat flour instead of the 2 cups of oats. Easy!

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these dog treats. You can use any cookie cutter but cookie cutters for dog treats give them a fun look.

How to Make Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

These treats are super easy to put together and so fun to cut into cute shapes. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mat, or use a non-stick baking sheet.
  2. In a blender or food processor, blend the oats until they resemble flour.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the oat flour, whole wheat flour, peanut butter, mashed bananas, egg, cinnamon, and ground flaxseed. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Roll the dough out on a floured surface.
  5. Use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out shapes, and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the treats are firm and the edges are lightly golden.
  7. Let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Recipe Tips

This dough is easy to work with, but here are a few handy tips to make things even smoother:

  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little extra oat or whole wheat flour.
  • If it’s too dry, add a splash of water or a bit more mashed banana to bring it together.
  • Want extra-crunchy treats? Roll thinner and bake a few minutes longer.
  • For slightly less crunch, roll a little thicker and keep an eye on the baking time.

Serving Size

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories to help keep their diet balanced and healthy.

If your pup hasn’t had some of these ingredients before, start with just one treat and keep an eye out for any signs of allergies or sensitivities. As always, your vet is the best resource for personalized advice!

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Once the treats are fully cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Need longer storage? Freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw before giving one to your pup or give it as a frozen treat.

Can People Eat These Treats?

Yes, they’re completely safe for humans to eat. There’s no added sugar, so they’re great for anyone looking to cut back on sweet snacks. They’re not super flavorful by human standards, but they’re wholesome, crunchy, and perfect for sharing a snack moment with your pup (if you’re into that kind of thing!).
