Ingredients and What They Bring to the Dish

This meal is packed with dog-friendly ingredients that are both tasty and nutritious:

  • Lean Ground Beef – A protein-rich option that adds flavor and helps build strong muscles.
  • Sweet Potato – A great source of fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness that dogs love.
  • Spinach – Adds a dose of iron, fiber, and beneficial greens to round out the meal.
  • Water – Keeps things moist while cooking and helps the sweet potatoes soften.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this recipe, here are some helpful notes and easy swaps:

  • Ground Beef – You can also use ground bison, chicken, turkey, or lamb. Be sure to use lean ground beef to keep the fat content down.
  • Sweet Potato – Feel free to use diced butternut squash, carrots, or fresh pumpkin instead.
  • Spinach – Broccoli, green beans, or zucchini make great substitutes.
  • Water – You can use beef bone broth as long as it’s made without onions or garlic. For a dog-safe version, check out my beef bone broth recipe.

How to Make Ground Beef And Sweet Potato Dog Food

This easy one-pan recipe makes cooking for your pup quick and stress-free:

  1. Peel and cut the sweet potato into small cubes.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drain the fat and return the beef to the skillet.
  3. Add the cubed sweet potato and water. Stir to combine, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the sweet potatoes are fork-tender, stir in the spinach.
  5. Reduce the heat to low, cover again, and cook for 5 more minutes.
  6. Let the food cool completely before serving.

How to Store the Food and How Long It Will Last

Store the cooled dog food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

For longer storage, freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers or bags. The food will last for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

You can warm it slightly in the microwave, but be sure it’s not hot when serving it to your dog.

Is this recipe suitable for puppies?

While all the ingredients are generally safe, puppies have unique nutritional requirements. It’s best to consult your vet before offering this to a growing pup.

Can people eat this food?

Yes, everything in this recipe is safe for human consumption. If you’re curious, give it a taste! You might want to season your portion, but the base is a simple, wholesome meal.

Serving Amount

Homemade dog food portions depend on your dog’s size, breed, age, and activity level. A general guideline is 1 cup of food per 20 pounds of body weight, but then goes down as the weight increases. Most dogs need 2-3% of their body weight in food daily. For personalized advice, check with your veterinarian.

And as always, if your dog hasn’t had any of these ingredients before, start with a small serving to check for any sensitivities or reactions.
