Benefits of Bison for Dogs

Dogs love eating bison – and you’ll love giving it to them. Here are a few reasons it’s such a good meat to give to dogs.

Bison is an excellent protein source for dogs. It’s lean, high in essential amino acids, and packed with iron and B vitamins, which support healthy muscles, energy levels, and overall well-being. Plus, it’s a fantastic alternative for dogs with sensitivities to more common proteins like chicken.

Disclaimer

Please note that I am not a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. Before starting your dog on homemade food, consult with your veterinarian to ensure it meets their specific dietary needs. This recipe is nutritious and safe but is not intended to be a complete meal replacement. It lacks certain essential vitamins and nutrients that dogs require for a balanced diet.

Transitioning to homemade food will likely necessitate additional nutrient supplements. Always speak with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate foods and supplements for your dog’s breed, weight, age, and health requirements.

Ingredients

This recipe is made with fresh, dog-safe ingredients to give your pup a balanced meal. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground bison: The star of the dish!
  • Boneless beef roast: Adds a rich protein base and flavor.
  • Olive oil: Provides healthy fats for your dog’s coat and skin.
  • Brown rice: A gentle grain for digestion and energy.
  • Sweet potato: A great source of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Carrot: Adds a little sweetness and essential vitamins like beta-carotene.
  • Green beans: Low-calorie and rich in vitamins.
  • Pumpkin puree: Helps with digestion and adds a creamy texture.
  • Spinach: Loaded with iron, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is easy to adjust for your dog’s needs:

  • Protein swaps: Use lamb, venison, chicken, or turkey instead of bison or beef.
  • Grain swaps: Substitute sorghum, barley, or quinoa for brown rice.
  • Veggie swaps: Replace any vegetable with dog-safe options like zucchini or peas.
  • Pumpkin substitute: Mashed butternut squash works perfectly in place of pumpkin puree.
