How to Make Beef Broth for Dogs
You can use three methods for making beef bone broth for dogs: slow cooker, pressure cooker, or stovetop.

Crock Pot Slow Cooker Method
- Place the parsley and beef bones in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Add apple cider vinegar.
- Add celery and carrots.
- Add enough water to cover.
- Cover and cook on low for 24 hours.
- Strain out and discard the cooked bones and vegetables.
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Method
- Place the parsley in the bottom of the Instant Pot.
- Add the beef bones.
- Add the apple cider vinegar.
- Add the vegetables.
- Add enough water to cover the ingredients.
- Cook on high pressure for 2 hours. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
- Strain the broth and discard the cooked bones and vegetables.
Stovetop Method
- Place the parsley in the bottom of a large soup pot or Dutch oven.
- Add the beef bones.
- Add the apple cider vinegar.
- Add the chopped carrots and celery.
- Add enough water to cover the ingredients by an inch.
- Bring it just to a boil then reduce the heat to low. Skim off any foam that rises to the top during the first hour of cooking.
- Loosely cover and simmer on the stovetop’s lowest setting for 24 hours. You may need to add a little water during the cooking process if it water level goes below the top of the ingredients.
- Strain and discard cooked bones and vegetables.
Cooling and Storing Beef Broth
Because beef broth is super hot after cooking for an extended period (or under pressure), it takes a long time to cool. The broth temperature will be between 40 and 140°F for a long period of time. That’s the temperature range when pathogens and harmful bacteria grow most quickly.
The best way to cool beef broth is in an ice bath. Fill the sink with ice and cold water. Have the broth in a large plastic or metal container and place it in the ice bath. Stir often while it is cooling. It should cool to about 50°F in about 15 minutes.
Then you can pour the broth into mason jars or airtight containers and store it in the refrigerator. Or pour it into freezer-safe plastic containers or ice cube trays and freeze it. Remember to transfer the bone broth cubes to a plastic freezer bag.
Note that when homemade beef broth cools in the fridge, it will become thick and have a hard layer of fat on top of the broth. That layer of fat is also called beef tallow. You can easily scrape off the fat and discard it or use it for cooking. It’s great for frying food.
Homemade beef broth will last up to 4 days in the refrigerator and 4 months in the freezer.

I made the broth without following a recipe. Basically, just boiled the bones and joints for 24 hours. Is it ok that I didn’t add ACV or lemon juice? If not, can I fix this?

That broth will still be nourishing and fine to use. The ACV breaks down the collagen and makes it more abundant in the broth but it’s not totally essential.
