Ingredients and What They Bring to the Dish

Every ingredient in this recipe has a purpose and adds nutrition to your pup’s plate. This is what you’ll need:

  • Beef chuck roast – A protein-packed cut of meat that’s juicy and flavorful when slow cooked.
  • Olive oil – Helps brown the meat and adds a boost of healthy fats.
  • Russet potatoes – Provide energy and fiber, plus they’re soft and filling.
  • Carrots – Loaded with beta-carotene, fiber, and natural sweetness dogs love.
  • Unsalted beef broth – Adds moisture and flavor, keeping everything tender and easy to chew.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this homemade meal for your dog, there are lots of easy swaps you can use to fit your pup’s needs:

  • Safety – Never use beef broth made with onions or garlic. Choose a dog-friendly broth from a pet store or make your own. Check out my beef broth for dogs recipe for a safe and simple option.
  • Beef – Swap with bison, lamb roast, or lean pork roast if you prefer.
  • Carrots – Use parsnips instead for a similar texture with a different flavor.
  • Potatoes – Try sweet potatoes, butternut squash, or fresh pumpkin for variety.
  • Extra veggies – Add chopped broccoli, green beans, kale, spinach, or zucchini during the last half hour of cooking.
  • Herbs – Stir in a tablespoon of chopped curly parsley, thyme leaves, or a teaspoon of fresh rosemary for extra nutrition and aroma.

How to Make Pot Roast for Dogs

It’s as easy as it is tasty! Here’s how to make this simple dog-friendly roast:

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F.
  2. In a Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil until shimmering.
  3. Place the beef roast in the pot and brown each side.
  4. Pour in the broth (or water), cover the pot with the lid, and bake for 1½ hours.
  5. While that’s cooking, peel and chop the carrots and potatoes into bite-sized pieces.
  6. Remove the pot from the oven, add the carrots and potatoes, and return it to the oven with the lid on for another 1 to 2 hours, or until everything is tender.

How to Store the Pot Roast and How Long It Will Last

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

For longer storage, divide it into portions and freeze in freezer-safe containers or bags. It will keep well for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

You can warm it slightly in the microwave, but make sure it is not hot before serving it to your dog.

Is this recipe suitable for puppies?

While the ingredients are generally safe, puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs. Check with your veterinarian to be sure it’s suitable for your puppy.

Can people eat this pot roast?

Yes, they can! Every ingredient is safe for human consumption. Feel free to try a bite. You might want to add a pinch of salt or seasoning to your portion for flavor.

Serving Amount

How much pot roast to serve your dog depends on many factors. Size, age, activity level, and breed all play a part. A general guideline is 1 cup for every 20 pounds of body weight, though the percentage often decreases as dogs get bigger. Most dogs need 2–3% of their body weight in food per day.

Always consult your veterinarian for exact amounts. And whenever introducing new foods, start small to be sure your dog doesn’t have any allergies or sensitivities.
