Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

It feels so good to spoil your dog with homemade treats – and you don’t have to be a gourmet chef to do it. If you can make pancakes, then you can make these.

Making treats at home doesn’t have to be complicated, and this recipe proves just how simple and rewarding it can be. Here’s why these banana carrot dog treats are a hit:

Easy to make with simple steps. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a beginner, this recipe is straightforward and fun. Your pup might even want to supervise the process!

Healthy, wholesome ingredients. These treats are made with natural, dog-safe ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Customizable and forgiving. Have a picky pup? You can make small tweaks to the recipe to suit their taste or dietary needs.

Perfect for spoiling your dog. Whether it’s a special occasion or just an ordinary day, these treats are an easy way to show your pup they’re loved.

Benefits of Bananas and Carrots for Dogs

Whenever you see a dog treat recipe with bananas and carrots, you know it’s going to be good for them. Here are a few reasons they are so good for dogs:

Bananas are a fantastic source of potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. They’re also loaded with fiber, which can aid in digestion, and natural sweetness to make treats extra tempting for your pup.

Carrots are low in calories and high in vitamin A. They’re great for your dog’s eyesight, immune system, and skin.

Ingredients

These treats are made with fresh, dog-safe ingredients to ensure your pup gets the best. Here’s what you’ll need and a little about each one:

  • Carrots: Fresh and shredded, they bring a pop of color, sweetness, and nutrients.
  • Banana: A ripe banana adds natural sweetness and moisture to the treats.
  • Egg: Helps bind the ingredients together while adding protein.
  • Coconut oil: Adds healthy fats for a shiny coat and a soft texture to the treats.
  • Oat flour: A gentle and gluten-free option that’s easy to digest.
  • Coconut flour: Absorbs moisture, ensuring the dough is the perfect consistency for rolling and cutting.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is easy to tweak to suit what’s in your pantry or pup’s preferences:

  • Banana substitutes: Swap it out for ½ cup of unsweetened applesauce or plain pumpkin puree.
  • Oat flour: If you don’t have oat flour on hand, make your own by blending old-fashioned oats into a fine powder. One cup of oats yields about ¾ cup of oat flour.
  • Other flours: You can use rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour instead of oat flour. Avoid using only whole wheat flour, as it can make the treats too dense.
  • Coconut flour: Do not substitute coconut flour. It’s essential for absorbing moisture and creating the right dough consistency.

Equipment Needed

You probably have all the kitchen items to measure ingredients. You’ll need a food processor to make the dough. You can use any cookie cutter but dog treat cutters make the cutest treats.

How to Make Banana Carrot Dog Treats

Baking these treats is a breeze, and your dog will love the results!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Use a hand grater or food processor to shred the carrots.
  3. Place the shredded carrots in a food processor. Add the banana (broken into pieces) and pulse until it is a coarse mixture.
  4. Add the egg and coconut oil. Process until smooth.
  5. Add the oat flour and coconut flour to the mixture and process until it forms a dough.
  6. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to ¼–⅓ inch thick and use cookie cutters to create fun shapes. Re-roll the scraps and repeat until all the dough is used.
  7. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15–18 minutes. Transfer the treats to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Serving Size

How many treats should you give your dog? That depends on their size, activity level, and daily diet. Treats should not exceed 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.

Start with one treat to ensure your dog doesn’t have any adverse reactions to new ingredients. Always consult your veterinarian if you’re unsure about portion sizes.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

At room temperature: Store the treats in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

In the refrigerator: Extend their shelf life to 1 week by refrigerating them in an airtight container.

Freezing: For long-term storage, freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months. Thaw them in the fridge before serving or give them as a frozen treat.

Can People Eat These Treats?

Yes, every ingredient in these treats is human-safe! While they’re tailored to a dog’s taste buds, you’re welcome to give one a try. You might find the lack of added sugar or seasoning a bit bland, but your pup will think they’re paw-sitively delicious!

Hello Renee – I wanted to ask for your guidance – if I do not have coconut flour, can I just add more oat flour?
Thank you in advance for your guidance.
