Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Have you ever wanted to give your dog a cookie, but stopped, worried about how bad it might be for them? Me too! That’s why I created this recipe. It’s made with simple, whole ingredients that are good for your pup.
And even though I used a cookie cutter, that’s optional. You can just scoop them and add them to the cookie sheet. Your pup won’t care if they’re in a paw shape or not (but I think they’re so cute when they’re in different shapes).
Benefits of Mango for Dogs
Mango is higher in sugar and fiber, so I wouldn’t just cut one up and let my dog eat it whole. But, in small bits, mango is really nutritious. It packs a healthy punch in just a few tiny bites.
Mango is high in antioxidants. That means they will help your body fight and prevent diseases. They’re also really high in vitamin C, which is fantastic for your dog’s immune system.
Ingredients
Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need to make the treats and a little about each ingredient. The exact measurements are in the printable recipe card below.
- Fresh Mango – The star of the treats!
- Peanut Butter – A flavor dog’s love. It also has healthy fats and protein.
- Egg – Binds the dough and adds protein.
- Water – To add moisture to the dough.
- Honey – For a little sweetness.
- Rice Flour – An easily digestible flour for dogs.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Whether you don’t have one of the ingredients, or you want to change things up, here are some of the most common ingredient swaps you can make.
Instead of mango, make dog treats with chopped-up apple or pear pieces.
Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs. It can also be called birch sugar, birch bark extract, or wood sugar.
And if your dog can’t have peanut butter, use almond butter or SunButter (sunflower seed butter). Just make sure it does not contain xylitol.
Don’t have rice flour? No problem! You can make rice flour by placing uncooked rice in a blender or food processor and blending until it reaches flour consistency.
You can also substitute rice flour with oat flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself. Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture.
Does your canine friend need more fiber? Add a tablespoon of ground flax seeds or chia seeds for extra fiber.
Equipment Needed
You probably have all the kitchen items for making the treats. You can use any cookie cutter but dog treat cutters make the cutest treats.
How to Make Mango Dog Treats
These are the recipe steps and some photos of making the treats. I hope they help you make them for your dog.
- Peel the mango, cut the flesh into small pieces (diced), and place them in a medium or large bowl.
- Add peanut butter, water, honey, and rice flour. Stir to combine well.
- Add the egg and stir until it forms a dough.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface.
- Cut treats using a cookie cutter. Place the cutouts on a baking sheet lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper. You can re-roll and cut the dough until it is all used.
- Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
- Remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet.
Serving Size
How many homemade treats should you give your canine companion? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Larger dogs can consume more than smaller dogs.
Treats should be included in your dog’s daily caloric intake. Make sure you don’t exceed the recommended amount for your dog. That amount changes for each dog breed, size, and activity level.
I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat per day. However, you can use your judgment or consult with your veterinarian regarding how many treats are right for your dog.
Also, start with small amounts when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions such as an upset stomach or digestive issues.
How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last
Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days.
For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Can people eat these dog treats?
Yep, they sure can! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They would be great for folks who prefer less sweet cookies or are watching their sugar intake. Give one a try and see if you like it.
