Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

This recipe uses simple, nourishing ingredients that come together in a soft and flavorful treat. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Blueberries – Bring a burst of fruity flavor and antioxidants.
  • Carrot – Adds natural sweetness, fiber, and vitamins.
  • Egg – Helps bind the dough and adds a bit of protein.
  • Coconut Oil – Gives a smooth texture and adds healthy fats.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle flour that holds everything together.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats – Add texture and extra fiber.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Carrot – You can use parsnip instead for a similar texture and mild flavor.
  • Blueberries – Freeze-dried blueberries or fresh chopped strawberries are great alternatives.
  • Oat Flour – Make your own by blending uncooked old-fashioned oats until fine. 1 cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • Flour Substitutes – Rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour will work. Whole wheat alone is too dense, and coconut flour absorbs too much moisture—so skip those.

How to Make Blueberry Carrot Dog Treats

These colorful treats come together in just a few simple steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Grate the carrot and place it in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the egg and coconut oil to the bowl and stir to combine.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the oat flour and oats. Add this dry mixture to the carrot mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Gently fold in the blueberries.
  6. Use a cookie scoop or small ice cream scoop to portion the dough. Roll each portion into a ball with your hands.
  7. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the treats are set.
  9. Let them cool completely before serving or storing.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months. Just thaw before giving one to your pup.

Can people eat these treats?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re not sweet like people cookies, but they’re full of real food flavor. Give one a try and see if you like it!

And as with any new food, start with a small piece to make sure your dog doesn’t have any sensitivities or allergies.
