A Treat Worth Wagging For

These Rice Krispie Treats for Dogs are a paws-down favorite in my house. The combination of natural peanut butter and unsweetened carob chips makes them smell and taste irresistible to dogs. Plus, the puffed rice cereal adds that satisfying crunch that dogs love to sink their teeth into.

Your fur baby will think they’re getting a dessert from the human table – but you’ll know they’re eating dog-safe food.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to give your furry friend a little extra love, these treats are a perfect choice.

Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

Here are a few of the reasons me and my dogs love this recipe – and yours will too!

Easy to Make: With just three ingredients and no baking involved, this recipe is simple enough for even the busiest pet parent.

Simple Ingredients: You won’t need to hunt down anything fancy. These treats are made with wholesome, dog-safe ingredients you likely already have at home.

Fun and Crunchy Snack: The texture is perfect for dogs who enjoy a good crunch, making these treats as satisfying to eat as they are fun to make.

Ingredients

Let’s take a closer look at what you’ll need to make these dog-friendly treats:

  • Unsweetened Carob Chips: A safe alternative to chocolate for dogs, with a naturally sweet flavor.
  • Natural Peanut Butter: Provides flavor, a bit of protein, and helps hold the treats together.
  • Sugar-Free Puffed Rice Cereal: Light, crunchy, and dog-safe, this is the base of the treats and adds that satisfying texture.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When choosing peanut butter, always double-check the label to ensure it’s free of xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.

If your dog has a peanut allergy or you prefer to switch things up, almond butter or sunflower seed butter are excellent substitutes.

How to Make Rice Krispies for Dogs

Ready to get started? Here’s how to whip up these tasty treats in no time:

  1. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup a breeze.
  2. In a double boiler, combine the carob chips and peanut butter. Heat until melted and smooth. Alternatively, you can microwave the mixture in 10-second increments, stirring after each, until fully melted.
  3. Pour the puffed rice cereal into a large mixing bowl. Add the melted carob and peanut butter mixture, stirring until all the cereal is evenly coated.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Press down lightly to compact the treats. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  5. Remove the treats from the pan using the parchment paper. Cut into small, dog-sized squares.

You can also use cookie cutters to make dog bone or dog shaped rice krispie treats.

Serving Size

When it comes to treats, moderation is key. These treats should be considered part of your dog’s daily caloric intake. Start with just one treat per day and monitor your dog for any signs of allergies or adverse reactions. For personalized recommendations, consult your veterinarian.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. They’ll last for up to a week.

If you’d like to make a bigger batch, these treats can be frozen for up to three months. Just thaw a portion as needed and serve.

Can People Eat These Rice Krispie Treats?

Absolutely! Every ingredient in these treats is safe for human consumption. They’re low in sugar, making them a great option if you’re trying to cut back on sweets. Give one a taste and see if you enjoy them as much as your dog does!
