Why make brownies for dogs?

You already know the pleasure of eating a fudgy brownie. Why would you deny your dog this feeling? These delicious dog treats look and smell like they’re made with chocolate, but they’re completely safe.

You’ll feel good sharing them as an occasional treat. They’re a welcome break from meat-based food and jerky snacks. Your dog will chow down on this soft and fudgy dessert bar.

Why You’ll Love This Dog Brownie Recipe

You’ll love this recipe because it feels like an indulgence, but it’s actually good for your dog! Plus, it’s a smart and healthy way to share a baked treat together.

Since they are made with both pumpkin and carob, they’re healthier than commercial treats. Plus, they are a great way to celebrate both Halloween and pumpkin season.

Add them to a treat bag, or break them into bite-size pieces and use them as training treats. Either way, you’ll love how much your dog enjoys them.

Ingredients

The full recipe with exact ingredient amounts is in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some information about the ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

For the pumpkin peanut butter swirl:

  • Canned or homemade pumpkin puree for dogs.
  • Egg – A great protein source.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – Natural peanut butter that is unsweetened.

For the pumpkin carob brownie batter:

  • Carob Powder – A dog-safe alternative to chocolate.
  • Pumpkin Puree – Adds fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Eggs – To hold the batter together and keep the brownies from being too dense.
  • Coconut Oil – A healthy fat.
  • Oat Flour – A flour that is easily digestible by dogs.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.

You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or SunButter (sunflower seed butter). Make sure it does not contain xylitol.

Do not use pumpkin pie filling because it may contain spices that are toxic to dogs.

You can make oat flour by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour. 1 cup of oats makes about ¾ cup of oat flour.

You can substitute all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.

You can substitute coconut oil with light olive oil (has less flavor than extra-virgin).

Equipment Needed

You probably have all the kitchen items for making the brownies. There’s no special equipment involved, just measuring cups, mixing bowls, and a square baking dish or cake pan.

How to Make Brownies for Dogs

These are the recipe steps and some photos of making the brownies. I hope they help you make this recipe.

  3. Place oat flour and carob powder in a separate small bowl.
  4. Whisk or stir until fully combined.

  1. Pour the brownie batter into a greased 8-inch baking dish. Spread it evenly.
  2. Use an ice cream scoop or large spoon to drop dollops of the pumpkin peanut butter mixture onto the brownie batter.
  3. Use a butter knife or the handle of a wooden spoon to swirl the peanut butter mixture into the brownie batter.
  4. Bake in a 350°F preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow to cool completely. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut it into squares either in the pan or on a large cutting board.

Recipe Tips and Variations

If you use a metal pan you can line the bottom with parchment paper to easily remove the brownies from the pan.

Stir in ½ cup of carob chips to the batter to make carob chip brownies.

Serving Size

How many homemade brownies should you give your canine companion? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Large dogs can consume more than smaller dogs. You can cut the brownies into bite-sized pieces or the appropriate sized treats for your dog.

Even though they are nutritious, they are still treats and should be included when considering your dog’s daily caloric intake. Make sure you don’t exceed the recommended amount for your dog. That amount changes for each dog breed, size, and activity level.

Dogs shouldn’t have too many desserts and treats, including these yummy ones. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one brownie per day.

However, you can use your judgment or consult with your veterinarian regarding how many are right for your dog.

Also, keep in mind when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to start with small amounts to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions.

How to Store Brownies and How Long They Last

Place the cooled brownies in an airtight container. Store them at room temperature for up to 4 days or in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

You can freeze brownies for longer storage. Place them in a freezer-safe sealed container or plastic freezer bag. They will last for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw them overnight, either at room temperature or in the fridge. Or give them to your dog as a frozen treat.

Can people eat these brownies?

Yes, they sure can! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re not sweet like brownies made for people. However, they would be a great treat for someone watching their sugar intake, allergic to chocolate, or both.
