Why You and Your Dog Will Love These Treats

These homemade dog treats are really easy to make. Just mix everything together, put them in a mold, and bake them like cookies. That’s it! They are made with simple ingredients – no artificial colors like store-bought treats.

If your dog loves the taste of pumpkin, then they are going to really love these! And you’ll be happy to share it with them because pumpkin and blueberries are so good for them.

Pumpkin is fantastic for your dog’s skin and coat health (excellent source of vitamin A). And blueberries are full of vitamin C and antioxidants.

Ingredients

The full recipe with exact ingredient amounts is in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some information about the ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pumpkin Puree – Use canned or make your own puree from fresh pumpkin
  • Fresh Blueberries – Full of essential vitamins and nutrients.
  • Egg – Binds the dough and adds protein.
  • Coconut Milk – Has healthy fatty acids and adds moisture to the dough.
  • Oat Flour – An easily digestible flour for dogs.
  • Baking Powder – Gives the treats a little airy texture.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Do not use pumpkin pie mix because it may contain spices that are toxic to dogs.

You can make oat flour by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour. 1 cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.

You can substitute rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself. Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture and the treats will not turn right.

Equipment Needed

You probably have all the kitchen items like measuring cups and bowls needed to make the treats. Using dog treat silicone molds in paw and bone shapes makes them cute.

How to Make Pumpkin Blueberry Dog Treats

These are the recipe steps and photos of making the treats. I hope they help you make these treats for your dog.

  1. Put the pumpkin, coconut milk, and egg in a bowl. Stir until it’s well combined.
  2. Put the oat flour and baking powder in a separate bowl. Stir or whisk to combine.
  3. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Gently stir in the blueberries.
  5. Place silicone molds on a baking sheet for stability and easy transfer to and from the oven.
  6. Spoon the dough into the molds.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 12-14 minutes.
  8. Let the treats cool completely in the molds before removing them. They may crumble if removed when hot out of the oven. You can then put them on a wire rack or directly into a storage container.

Serving Amount

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. If you’re unsure of how many to give, check with your vet.

If this is your dog’s first time trying any of these ingredients, start with a small piece to make sure they don’t have any sensitivities or allergic reactions.

How to Store Them and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 1 week.

For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes, they sure can! Everything in the treats is safe for human consumption. Give one a try – you may like it.

You can grind up oatmeal for flour. You could use almond flour but it adds a lot of fat and calories to the treats.

You can but you might need to add a bit more flour and adjust baking time. Toss the blueberries with some flour to coat them before adding them to the dough. They may still may bleed into the dough and cause it to turn purple. Or you can rinse them in cold water several times then dry them with paper towels.
