This homemade lamb stew for dogs is packed with wholesome ingredients and slow-cooked to perfection. Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

There’s something really rewarding about making a homemade meal just for your dog. It’s a great way to bond, show love, and take control of what’s going into their bowl.

It’s easy to make. Just chop, combine, and bake. The oven does most of the work!

Made with wholesome ingredients. Every bite is filled with real meat, fresh vegetables, and dog-safe broth.

Simple to customize. You can swap ingredients depending on what you have on hand or what your dog likes.

Great for meal prep. Make a big batch and store individual portions in the fridge or freezer for later meals.

Perfect for dogs with food allergies. Lamb is a great alternative protein for dogs sensitive to chicken or beef.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Stew

This stew is made with simple, nutritious ingredients that are safe and healthy for dogs:

  • Lamb shanks – A rich protein source that’s full of flavor and nutrients.
  • Potatoes – A good source of energy and fiber.
  • Carrots – Provide natural sweetness along with beta-carotene and fiber.
  • Green beans – A low-calorie veggie rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Beef broth – Adds savory flavor and moisture.
  • Curly parsley – Adds a fresh finish and supports digestion.

Important Ingredient Notes

Always keep your dog’s safety in mind when selecting ingredients for homemade meals.

  • Avoid broth with onions or garlic. These are toxic to dogs. Use dog-safe beef broth (found at pet stores or online), or make your own. Here’s my recipe for homemade beef broth for dogs.
  • Only use curly parsley. Italian flat-leaf parsley can be toxic or cause skin irritation in dogs.
  • Never feed cooked bones. After cooking, bones become brittle and can splinter, causing serious internal injuries.

Ingredient Substitutions

This recipe is very adaptable! Here are a few substitution ideas:

  • Lamb shanks: Use lamb stew meat or lamb shoulder blade chops if you prefer.
  • Potatoes: Substitute with sweet potatoes or butternut squash.
  • Green beans: Swap with chopped broccoli or zucchini.
  • Beef broth: Use chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even water. Just make sure any broth is free of onions and garlic.

How to Make Lamb Stew for Dogs

This stew takes a little time in the oven, but the prep is quick and simple. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F.
  2. Peel and chop the potatoes into small cubes. Peel and slice the carrots. Cut the green beans into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Place the lamb shanks, chopped vegetables, and beef broth into a casserole dish. Cover with a lid or aluminum foil.
  4. Bake for 3½ hours.
  5. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the meat is tender and easily pulled from the bone.
  6. Remove the meat from the bones and shred or chop it. Discard the bones.
  7. Add the shredded meat back to the dish and stir to combine with the vegetables.
  8. Top with chopped curly parsley.
  9. Let the stew cool completely before serving it to your pup.

Serving Size

How much stew you give your dog depends on their size, breed, and activity level. A general guideline is 1 cup of food per 20 pounds of body weight.

Be sure to start with small amounts if your dog hasn’t had any of these ingredients before, and monitor for any sensitivities.

How often can I feed my dog this stew?

This lamb stew can be served as a meal replacement a couple of times a week, depending on your dog’s dietary needs. It’s not intended as a complete and balanced long-term diet but makes a great supplement or special meal. Be sure to check with your vet for personalized feeding recommendations.

Is this stew suitable for puppies?

While the ingredients are generally safe for puppies, their nutritional needs are more specific. It’s best to consult your vet before making this stew a part of a puppy’s diet.

How to Store the Stew and How Long It Will Last

  • Refrigerator: Store cooled stew in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer: Portion into freezer-safe containers or bags and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • To thaw: Place in the fridge overnight.
  • To reheat: Warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Let it cool to room temperature before serving.

Can people eat this stew?

Yes! All the ingredients are human-safe. It’s basically a basic, unseasoned lamb stew. If you want to try it, just add some salt, pepper, or your favorite seasonings to your portion and enjoy!

Disclaimer

Please note that I am not a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. Before starting your dog on homemade food, consult with your veterinarian to ensure it meets their specific dietary needs. This recipe is nutritious and safe but is not intended to be a complete meal replacement. It lacks certain essential vitamins and nutrients that dogs require for a balanced diet.

Transitioning to homemade food will likely necessitate additional nutrient supplements. Always speak with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate foods and supplements for your dog’s breed, weight, age, and health requirements.

Nutritional Benefits of Lamb for Dogs

Lamb is a nutrient-rich protein that’s ideal for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies to more common meats like chicken or beef. It’s packed with essential amino acids, iron, zinc, and B vitamins, all of which help support muscle growth, energy levels, and a strong immune system. Plus, its rich flavor tends to be very appealing, even to picky eaters!
