Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

This recipe is packed with benefits for you and your furry friend. From convenience to customization, there’s so much to love about this homemade pork dog food! Here are a few of my favorite things about this dog food recipe:

Easy to make two ways. Whether you have all day or just an hour, you can make this recipe in a slow cooker or Instant Pot with minimal effort.

Simple, wholesome ingredients. You’ll recognize everything in this recipe, and there’s no need for hard-to-find or overly processed components.

Customizable for your dog’s needs. Easily swap out ingredients to suit your dog’s dietary preferences or restrictions.

A special treat your dog will adore. The delicious aroma and taste of this meal are sure to make it a favorite for your pup.

Benefits of Pork for Dogs

Pork is a great source of protein, offering essential amino acids that support muscle maintenance and repair. It’s also rich in vitamins and minerals like thiamine, aiding energy metabolism. When served in lean cuts, pork can be a tasty and nutritious addition to your dog’s diet.

Important Note About Dogs Eating Pork

While pork is nutritious, it’s important to use only lean cuts, such as pork loin or tenderloin, to avoid fats that are tough for dogs to digest. Too much fat can lead to pancreatitis, a serious health issue. Treat this recipe as a special meal, serving it once or twice a week instead of a regular diet.

Disclaimer

Please note that I am not a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. Before starting your dog on homemade food, consult with your veterinarian to ensure it meets their specific dietary needs. This recipe is nutritious and safe but is not intended to be a complete meal replacement. It lacks certain essential vitamins and nutrients that dogs require for a balanced diet.

Transitioning to homemade food will likely necessitate additional nutrient supplements. Always speak with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate foods and supplements for your dog’s breed, weight, age, and health requirements.

Ingredients

This dog food is made with just a handful of wholesome ingredients:

  • Pork Loin Roast: The star of the dish!
  • Apple: Adds natural sweetness and fiber for healthy digestion.
  • Carrots: Provide a satisfying crunch and are loaded with beta-carotene.
  • Green Beans: A low-calorie veggie with plenty of vitamins and minerals.
  • Sorghum: A nutritious, gluten-free grain that’s easy to digest.
  • Water: Keeps everything tender and ensures proper hydration during cooking.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

One of the best things about this recipe is how flexible it is! Here are some simple swaps to make it work for your dog’s preferences or what you have on hand.

Protein substitutions. You can use beef, lamb, venison, chicken, or turkey instead of pork.

Grain options. Replace sorghum with brown rice, barley, or quinoa for a grain-free alternative.

Vegetable swaps. Potato or any dog-safe vegetable can stand in for green beans or carrots.

Fruit flexibility. A pear or peach can replace the apple, or you can use 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce instead, just reduce the water by ½ cup and stir the applesauce in after cooking.

How to Make Pork Dog Food

This recipe is a breeze to make, whether you prefer the slow cooker or Instant Pot. Here’s what to do for each method:

Slow Cooker

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apple. Peel and slice the carrots. Cut the green beans into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Place the sorghum and water in the slow cooker and stir to combine.
  3. Add the pork roast, apple, carrots, and green beans.
  4. Cook on HIGH for 4 hours.
  5. Remove the pork roast and shred or chop it.
  6. Return the meat to the slow cooker and stir. Cool before serving.

Instant Pot

  1. Prepare the apple, carrots, and green beans as above.
  2. Add the sorghum and water to the Instant Pot, stirring to combine.
  3. Place the pork roast, apple, carrots, and green beans into the pot.
  4. Cook on high pressure for 45 minutes, then let the pressure release naturally.
  5. Shred or chop the pork and mix it back in. Cool before serving.

Serving Size

The amount you serve depends on your dog’s size, activity level, and breed. A good rule of thumb is 1 cup of food per 20 pounds of body weight. Start with small portions to ensure your dog tolerates the new recipe well.

How to Store Homemade Dog Food and How Long It Lasts

Store cooled food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

For longer storage, freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight. Serve cold or slightly warmed in the microwave, just don’t overheat it!

Can people eat this food?

Absolutely! Every ingredient is safe for humans, though you might find it a bit bland without seasoning. Add a little salt and pepper, and you’ve got yourself a simple, hearty meal.
