Why You and Your Dog Will Love These Cupcakes

You and your four-legged friend will love these pupcakes – and here are the three biggest reasons why:

Simple dog-friendly ingredients. No weird preservatives or artificial flavors here – just wholesome ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Every bite is packed with peanut butter, banana, and applesauce for a naturally sweet and pup-approved treat.

Easy to make. No complicated steps, no fancy equipment – just mix, scoop, and bake! These come together in no time, so you can whip up a batch whenever your dog deserves a little extra love (which is always, right?).

Perfect for special occasions. Whether it’s your pup’s birthday, Gotcha Day, or a holiday, these cupcakes make any day feel like a celebration. Plus, they look adorable when topped with the peanut butter yogurt frosting!

Ingredients

These cupcakes are made with simple, wholesome ingredients that are safe for dogs to enjoy. Here’s what you’ll need and a little about each one:

  • Natural peanut butter – Has healthy fats, protein, and is a flavor dogs love.
  • Banana – Naturally sweet and full of potassium, banana gives these cupcakes a soft texture and is another flavor dogs love.
  • Plain Greek yogurt – A creamy and protein-packed ingredient that’s great for both the cupcake batter and the frosting. Be sure to use unsweetened yogurt without artificial sweeteners.
  • Unsweetened applesauce – Adds moisture and natural sweetness without any added sugar.
  • Egg – Helps bind the ingredients together and gives the pupcakes structure.
  • Oat flour – A great flour option for dogs that’s easy to digest and gives the cupcakes a tender texture.
  • Baking powder – A small amount helps the cupcakes rise.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Safety is important when making dog treats. And you might wonder if you can swap out an ingredient. So here’s some info to help:

No xylitol! Always check your peanut butter and yogurt to ensure it doesn’t contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs.

Peanut butter swaps. If your pup has a peanut allergy or you just want to switch things up, almond butter or sunflower seed butter work as great alternatives.

Baking powder safety. In small amounts, baking powder is safe for dogs.

Oat flour options. If you don’t have oat flour, you can make your own by blending uncooked old-fashioned oats in a food processor until fine. 1 cup of oats will yield about ¾ cup of oat flour.

Flour substitutions. You can swap oat flour with rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. However, whole wheat flour alone is too dense and won’t give the best texture. Avoid coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture and the cupcakes won’t turn out right.

How to Make Cupcakes for Dogs

Making these peanut butter and banana pupcakes is as easy as mixing, scooping, and baking! Here’s how you’ll make them and some photos of the steps. And note there’s a printable recipe card at the bottom of this article.

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and prep a muffin pan with non-stick spray or cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the banana. Add Greek yogurt, peanut butter, applesauce, and the egg. Stir until everything is smooth and well combined.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the oat flour and baking powder.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Spoon the batter evenly into the muffin cups, filling each about halfway.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let them cool completely before frosting.
  7. For the frosting, mix Greek yogurt with peanut butter. Stir until smooth, then spread it on top of the cooled cupcakes.

Recipe Tips

Here are a few ways that you can change this recipe while still making the perfect dog-friendly cupcakes.

Mini cupcakes: Use a mini muffin pan and reduce the baking time to about 10 minutes. These are great for small dogs or bite-sized treats!

Fluffier frosting: Whip the peanut butter yogurt frosting with a hand mixer for a light, airy texture.

Serving Size

Dogs will happily gobble these up, but portion size matters!

  • Medium and large dogs can enjoy a whole pupcake.
  • Smaller dogs should only have half or a quarter of a cupcake (or a mini one!).

If your pup hasn’t had some of these ingredients before, start with a small portion to make sure they don’t have any allergies or sensitivities.

How to Store the Cupcakes and How Long They Last

Homemade pupcakes don’t have preservatives, so proper storage is key!

Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days.

For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Place the pupcakes in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze them solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.

Can people eat these cupcakes?

Absolutely! These pupcakes are made with human-friendly ingredients, so you can totally take a bite. Since they don’t have added sugar, they’re not as sweet as traditional cupcakes, but if you’re watching your sugar intake, they might be just right for you. Give one a try and see what you think!
