Why This is the Best Gelatin Dog Treats Recipe

This recipe stands out because it’s super easy, customizable, and made with real food your dog will love. Here’s why it’s a keeper:

  • Simple Ingredients – Just a few wholesome ingredients you likely already have on hand.
  • Healthy and Homemade – No artificial stuff, just real food made with love.
  • Easy to Customize – Swap in different broths, veggies, or purees to keep things exciting for your dog.
  • Fun to Make – Use silicone molds to create cute shapes or just pour it into a pan and slice. Either way, it’s quick and easy.

Ingredients and Their Benefits

These dog gummies are more than just tasty, they’re also a nutritious treat you can feel good about giving your pup. Here’s why each ingredient matters:

  • Unflavored Gelatin: A great source of collagen, which supports healthy joints, skin, and digestion in dogs. It’s also good for maintaining strong bones and a shiny coat.
  • Beef Broth: Adds flavor and hydration. Homemade or dog-safe bone broth without onion or garlic can also provide valuable nutrients like amino acids and minerals.
  • Carrots: Naturally sweet and loaded with beta-carotene, which supports eye health and provides antioxidants.
  • Green Beans: A low-calorie, high-fiber veggie that helps support digestion and can be a great snack for dogs watching their weight.

Important Ingredient Notes

Before you get started, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

Use unflavored gelatin only – skip flavored varieties, as they often contain sugar or xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Choose a dog-safe broth that does not contain onions, garlic, or added salt. You can make your own or use store-bought broth made specifically for dogs. Check out my recipe for dog-safe beef bone broth.

Avoid canned or seasoned vegetables with added salt, garlic, or onion. Stick to plain, cooked, or steamed veggies.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items for making the gummies. The only special item is a silicone mold. I used molds with different shapes including dogs, paw prints, dog houses, and dog bones.

You can make gummy bears for dogs with gummy bear molds. If you do, I recommend leaving out the veggies.

You can also make them without molds. Just pour the gelatin mixture into a 9×9-inch pan. After it is set, turn it over onto a cutting board covered with parchment paper. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut it into treats.

How to Make Dog Gummy Treats

Making dog gummies couldn’t be easier! If you’ve ever made gelatin snacks for yourself, you’ll be right at home. Here’s what to do:

  1. Pour cold broth into a medium bowl.
  2. Add gelatin powder to the cold broth and let it sit for 5 minutes. Do not stir.
  3. Pour the remaining broth into a pot and bring it to a boil. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool for 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Add the hot broth to the gelatin broth mixture. Stir well.
  5. Place silicone molds on a cookie sheet. For easier release, spray the molds with olive oil.
  6. Pour the gummy mixture into the molds. Leave room in the sections if you are adding vegetables.
  7. Steam carrots and green beans, and then cut them into small pieces.
  8. Place vegetable pieces into the individual mold sections.
  9. Place the cookie sheet with the molds on it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or until set.
  10. Remove the molds from the fridge and turn them upside down to remove the gummies from the molds.

Recipe Tips for Success

Here are a few tips that will make this gelatin treat come out perfectly every single time.

  • Make sure the liquid you’re pouring the gelatin powder into is cool.
  • Don’t stir the gelatin when you pour it into the liquid; it can cause lumps and won’t bloom properly.
  • Use a spouted measuring cup or spoon to pour the mixture neatly into the molds.
  • To help keep their shape, spread them out on a baking sheet and refrigerate them uncovered for 24 to 48 hours.
  • You can freeze them, but do not thaw them because they won’t thaw properly. Use them as frozen treats.
  • You can also make more jiggly or firmer treats. When adjusting, keep this in mind:
    • Three tablespoons of gelatin per cup of liquid is the recommended ratio of gelatin to liquid. More gelatin makes firmer gummies, and less makes them a little more jiggly.

Recipe Variations

Want to mix things up? These gummy treats are easy to customize with different flavors and add-ins. Here are some tasty and dog-friendly variations to try:

  • Fruit – Add chopped banana, blueberries, or chopped strawberries for a fruity twist.
  • Herbs – Stir in a little chopped mint, curly parsley (avoid flat-leaf), or rosemary for added freshness.
  • Liquid Bases – Swap the broth for coconut water, lite coconut milk, unsweetened almond milk, dog-safe chicken bone broth or stock, plain fruit juice (no sugar or additives), or just water.
  • Meat – Mix in chopped cooked beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, rabbit, venison, or veal.
  • Seeds – A sprinkle of ground flaxseed, sunflower seed kernels, or chia seeds can add texture and nutrition.
  • Spices – A dash of cinnamon, ginger, or turmeric adds warmth and health benefits.
  • Veggies – Try small bits of steamed broccoli, cauliflower, or peas.
  • Pumpkin Puree – A spoonful of plain pumpkin puree adds fiber and a mild, dog-approved flavor.

Avoid using kiwi or pineapple because both contain natural enzymes that break down gelatin and will keep it from setting properly, leaving you with a runny mess instead of firm gummies.

Serving Size

These dog gummy treats are low-calorie and low-fat, making them a great option for a light, guilt-free snack. Because they’re made with simple, wholesome ingredients, they’re perfect for everyday treating or as a fun reward.

Start by giving your dog one gummy to make sure they tolerate the ingredients well. Even natural, healthy treats can cause digestive upset if they’re new to your dog’s diet.

As with all treats, they should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. For personalized portion advice based on your dog’s size, age, and health, it’s always best to check with your veterinarian.

How to Store the Gummies and How Long They Last

After making the gummies, place them on a baking sheet and refrigerate them uncovered for 24 to 48 hours. This helps them firm up and hold their shape better.

Once set, transfer the gummies to an airtight container. Use wax or parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. Stored in the refrigerator, they’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

To freeze, arrange the gummies in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe container or zip-top freezer bag. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 4 months.

Do not thaw frozen dog gelatin treats because thawing causes the gelatin to break down and separate. Instead, serve them as a frozen treat your dog will love!

Can humans eat dog gummies?

Yes, they sure can! All of the ingredients in these gummies are safe for human consumption. While the flavor is tailored for dogs, you can make a human-friendly version by using fruit juice, herbal tea, or coconut water as the liquid base and adding your favorite mix-ins like fresh fruit or herbs. Just skip the veggie bits unless you’re feeling adventurous.
