Why You’ll Love This Chicken Dog Treat Recipe

It’s made with real chicken. These treats are packed with actual shredded cooked chicken and not just chicken flavor. Your pup gets a protein-packed snack that’s both tasty and nutritious.

Sweet potato adds a healthy boost. A little shredded sweet potato adds fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness, making these treats a wholesome option your dog will still think is a treat.

No weird stuff. Just a few simple, recognizable ingredients. No preservatives, no fillers, no artificial anything. You’ll feel great knowing exactly what’s in your dog’s snacks.

Perfect for picky pups. With savory chicken and a hint of sweetness from the sweet potato, these treats are great for dogs who turn up their noses at store-bought biscuits.

These chicken dog treats are made with simple, dog-friendly ingredients. Each one brings something special, whether it’s flavor, texture, or a little nutritional boost. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Chicken – The star of the treats!
  • Sweet Potato – Adds a sweet flavor and increases the amount of fiber.
  • Brown Rice Flour – A gluten-free flour that’s easy to digest.
  • Egg – Holds everything together and adds more protein.
  • Chicken Broth – Adds moisture to the dough and more chicken flavor.
  • Coconut Oil – A healthy fat that is fantastic for your dog’s brain and skin.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this easy recipe for chicken dog treats, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Use plain cooked chicken. It can be white or dark meat using skinless chicken breast or thighs. Boiling is the best method for preparing the chicken. Then you can use the broth instead of buying it separately. Canned chicken usually contains too much salt, so avoid using it.

Be sure to use chicken broth without onions or garlic. Check the label to be sure. Some pet stores carry dog-safe chicken broth. Or you can make your bone broth.

You can make brown rice flour by placing uncooked brown rice in a blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.

You can substitute oat flour for brown rice flour. You can make oat flour by placing uncooked rolled oats in a food processor and processing until the ground oats have a flour consistency.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these chicken treats for dogs. You can use any cookie cutter of your choice but Cookie Cutters for Dog Treats give them a fun look.

These are the recipe steps and photos of making the treats. I hope they help you make this recipe! You can scroll down to the bottom of this article for a printable recipe card.

  5. Roll out the dough until it is about 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick.

  10. Place the baked treats on a wire rack to cool to room temperature.

Serving Size

How many treats should you give your dog? That depends on their size, activity level, and daily diet. Treats should not exceed 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.

Start with one treat to ensure your dog has no adverse reactions to new ingredients. Always consult your veterinarian if you’re unsure about portion sizes.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature or 1 week in the fridge.

For more extended storage, you can freeze them for up to 4 months. Thaw them at room temperature or give them as a frozen treat.

Can humans eat these chicken treats for dogs?

Yes, they’re totally safe for humans to eat since they’re made with simple, wholesome ingredients. They’re not seasoned like a typical snack, but if you’re a fan of Chicken in a Biskit crackers, you might actually enjoy these too! Just keep in mind, they’re meant for dogs.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Brown Rice Flour or Oat Flour
  • 1 cup Shredded Cooked Chicken
  • ½ cup Shredded Sweet Potato
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup Chicken Broth
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, chicken, and sweet potato.
  • Add the egg, chicken broth, and coconut oil and combine well.
  • Form the dough into a ball and place it on a lightly floured surface.
  • Roll out the dough until about ½ to ¼-inch thick.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut out the shapes and lay them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Gather the scraps and re-form the dough and roll out as necessary.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until lightly browned.
  • Transfer the baked treats to a wire rack to cool after baking.

Notes

If you don’t have brown rice flour or oat flour, you can make your own by adding 2 cups of uncooked brown rice or 2 cups of uncooked old-fashioned oats to a blender or food processor and blend until it has the consistency of flour.
The amount of treats will depend on the size of cookie cutter. I used a medium-sized bone-shaped cookie cutter, approximately 3.5 x 1.2 inches.
Baking time will vary depending on the size and thickness of the treats.
Store the treats in an airtight container. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature or 4 months frozen.

For this recipe or any of your recipes that require rolling out can I use a silicone molds instead of rolling it out? Thanks

You can use silicone molds. The treats won’t be as crunchy unless you bake them a little after you take them out of the mold.

For 1cup of shredded cooked chicken can I use 1/2 cup of dried ground chicken powder? Thanks

No. Using dried chicken powder would drastically change the dough and the treats would not come out right.

I used homemade applesauce instead of sweet potatoes. Turned out great. I just have a question about storage. How do you store them and how long are they good for?
