Why This Cheesecake for Dogs Recipe is the Best

Your dog is going to love this cheesecake! And you won’t mind making it because it is so simple!

Whether you are making this for a holiday, special treat, gotcha day, or birthday, your dog will be so happy with this delicious dessert.

When you want something special for your dog, this is the best of all dog cheesecake cake recipes! Oh, and the soft texture makes it great for older dogs.

You may already have all of the ingredients for this dog friendly cheesecake. Yep, I used regular pantry items and simple ingredients found in grocery stores in this recipe. None of these ingredients require special ordering or trips to specialty markets.

Why Make Cheesecake For Dogs?

Human cheesecake is not good for dogs. It has lots of sugar and dogs shouldn’t consume sugary desserts. Too much sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues.

Many common ingredients found in a cheesecake are harmful or toxic ingredients for dogs. Some bad ingredients are lemon juice, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and vanilla extract.

Human cheesecake can cause an adverse reaction in dogs. A dog may experience serious gastrointestinal discomfort or upset stomach. This is why it is best to make a cheesecake with dog-friendly ingredients.

Important Note About This Dog Cheesecake

Your furry friends will love these little cheesecake doggy desserts. But it contains dairy. So please don’t give it to dogs that are completely lactose-intolerant. All the dairy in this cheesecake could give your pup adverse effects like abdominal pain, digestive problems, and stomach upset.

Ingredients for Making Cheesecake for Dogs

The detailed ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share a list and some information about the natural ingredients in this dog cheesecake recipe.

For the crust:

  • Old Fashioned Oats – The base of the crust.
  • Unsweetened Coconut Flakes – Adds flavor and healthy nutrients to the crust.
  • Egg – Adds protein and binds the crust.
  • Coconut oil – A healthy fat.
  • Honey – To add a touch of sweetness.
  • Ground Cinnamon – For flavor.

For the cheesecake filling:

  • Cottage Cheese – A healthy low-fat high-protein cheese for dogs.
  • Cream Cheese – For creamy texture.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Healthier for dogs than sour cream.
  • Egg – Adds protein and gives it a smooth and rich texture.
  • Vanilla Flavor (alcohol-free vanilla) – For flavor.
  • Coconut Milk – Healthy liquid for the filling.
  • Oat Flour – Another binder that makes it easier to cut into clean slices.

Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic cheesecakes.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this simple dog cheesecake recipe, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Be sure to use alcohol-free vanilla, also known as vanilla flavor. You should be able to find it in grocery stores. Otherwise, a good choice is to order Singing Dog Vanilla Flavor on Amazon. Or you can just leave it out since it’s only in there for flavor.

It’s easy to make your own oat flour. All you have to do is place uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender or food processor and blend until it reaches flour consistency.

As for which type of cheese to use, either low-fat cottage cheese, cream cheese, and Greek yogurt will work to make a low-fat cheesecake.

You can also substitute the oats in the crust with crushed crunchy dog treats.

And if your dog can digest flour just fine, you can substitute the oat flour in the filling with regular all-purpose flour. Note that wheat flour contains gluten and is not recommended for dogs with gluten intolerance.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make this cake. But just in case, here’s a list:

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Food Processor or Blender
  • 4-inch Springform Pans
  • 9-inch Baking Pan

How to Make Dog Carrot Cake

These are the recipe steps and photos of the process of making dog cheesecake. I hope they help you make this recipe for dog cheesecake from scratch!

You can scroll down to the bottom of this article for a printable recipe card.

To make the crust:

  1. Place the oats in a food processor and process them to make a coarse powder.
  2. Add the coconut, coconut oil, egg, cinnamon, and honey. Process until well combined.
  3. Divide the crust mixture into two equal parts and press it into the bottom of two small 4-inch springform pans.
  4. Bake at 350°F for 8 minutes.
  5. Remove the crusts from the oven and cool them completely on a wire rack.

To make the cheesecake filling and bake the cheesecakes:

  1. Add the cottage cheese to a food processor and process until smooth.
  2. Add the cream cheese, yogurt, egg, vanilla, coconut milk, and oat flour to the processor and process until smooth and combined.
  3. Divide the cheese mixture into two equal parts and pour the batter over the two cooled crusts.
  4. Place the pans in a baking pan with ½ inch of water in the bottom.
  5. Bake at 350°F for 50 minutes.
  6. Turn off the oven and leave the cheesecakes in the oven. Allow them to cool completely.
  7. Remove the cheesecakes from the pans.
  8. Refrigerate the cheesecakes in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap.

To make mini cheesecakes for dogs, use a cupcake pan. Reduce the baking time so you don’t over-bake the cheesecakes. Cheesecake is done when the surface is firm but has a slight give.

Serve this awesome dog cheesecake topped with berries (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, or any dog-safe berry).

Serving Size

How much dog cheesecake should you give your dog at once? It depends on the size of your dog and what else you gave your pet to eat that day. This might be a healthy dessert for dogs, but too much of it is not a good thing.

Treats should not make up the majority of your dog’s calorie intake. They should be something they eat occasionally, along with healthy dog foods.

For this reason, do not let your dog eat the whole cheesecake at one time. I suggest only giving your spoiled hound only one small piece of cheesecake.

And always remember when introducing your dog to new foods, to only give small amounts to see how your dog handles it.

How to Store Cheesecake

Wrap the cheesecake with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator.

For longer storage, you can freeze cheesecake. Wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap and then a layer of aluminum foil. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

How long does this doggy cheesecake last?

Cheesecake stored in the fridge should last 5 to 7 days.

Cheesecake stored in the freezer should last up to 3 months.

Can you eat this dog cheesecake?

Sure thing, you can eat this cheesecake! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. But I doubt you would enjoy it since it’s not sweet. I suggest making a regular cheesecake to enjoy and share with family and friends.

I found this recipe just a few weeks out from my dog’s twelfth birthday after being on a weeks-long cheesecake kick, and I could not be more happy about it! It came out perfectly and my girl loved it – thank you so much for sharing.

Making it today as it is our Jake’s 13th birthday today!! He’s a cancer survivor amongst other things. I had surgery so I had to oder ingredients from store . When I opened my oats, they were full of protein. In other words I had to throw them out they had bugs so I had a ready-made graham cracker crust and I said well I just won’t give him the crust, but it’s something to put the cheesecake in and for the oat flour in the mix I used some of his dog cookies and that’s how I changed it. I put a little bit of honey and maple syrup in the cheesecake itself, but just a little tiny bit cause he won’t eat blueberries I know him already. I’ll let you know how he liked it. Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe. I’ve got the pan of water in the oven. Everything is preheating to 350.

My dog loves goats milk, so I swapped out the cream cheese for goat cheese, and topped with frozen blueberries after it came out of the oven. My second year bringing them to the dog park on our Jon‘s birthday this year. I tried them in a mini muffin pan.
