Ingredients And What They Bring To The Treats

This recipe uses a short list of familiar ingredients that work together to create crunchy, flavorful dog treats.

  • Carrots bring natural sweetness, texture, and added nutrients.
  • Low-fat cream cheese adds richness and a subtle tangy flavor reminiscent of carrot cake frosting.
  • Banana helps bind the dough and adds natural sweetness without added sugar.
  • Ground cinnamon adds that classic carrot cake flavor dogs love.
  • Oat flour provides a nutritious base and is easily digestible by dogs.

Ingredient Notes And Substitutions

These treats are easy to adapt based on what you have on hand or your dog’s preferences. Here are some helpful tips and swaps.

  • You can substitute the banana with plain pumpkin puree or mashed sweet potato.
  • For extra flavor, you can add up to 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.
  • Oat flour can be made at home by blending old-fashioned rolled oats until they reach a flour-like consistency. One cup of oats makes about three-fourths cup of flour.
  • Brown rice flour can be used instead of oat flour and can be made by blending uncooked brown rice.
  • All-purpose flour or a mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour can also be used. Whole wheat flour alone is too dense.
  • Do not use coconut flour since it absorbs too much moisture and will dry out the dough.

Equipment Needed

You likely have the kitchen items you need for making the treats. You can use any cookie cutter, but bone-shaped cookie cutters make them extra cute.

How To Make Carrot Cake Dog Treats

These carrot cake treats are fun to make and bake up beautifully crunchy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
  2. Combine the oat flour and cinnamon in a bowl.
  3. Shred the carrots and put them in a large bowl. Add the cream cheese and banana, then mix with a hand mixer until smooth.
  4. Add the flour mixture to the carrot mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Place the dough on parchment paper and roll it out to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Re-roll and cut the dough until it’s all used.
  7. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes.
  8. Allow the treats to cool completely on the baking sheet before serving.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes, they sure can. All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Try one and see if you like it.
