Apple Carrot Dog Treats Ingredients
The exact ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some information about the ingredients I used in this homemade apple and carrot dog treats recipe.
Here’s a list of what you’ll need. They are common ingredients found in regular grocery stores. Oh, use organic ingredients if you want to make organic dog treats.
- Apple – any type of apple will work beautifully in this recipe. Red apples tend to be sweeter.
- Carrot – save yourself time and buy a bag of pre-shredded carrots or matchstick carrots.
- Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds sweetness and moisture to the dough.
- Egg – adds protein and is a binder for the dough.
- Coconut Oil – a healthy fat for the dough.
- Blackstrap Molasses – adds just a touch of sweetness.
- Almond Flour – this is what makes these treats gluten-free. Use almond flour, not almond meal.
- Oat Flour – If you don’t have oat flour you can make your own by pureeing oatmeal in a food processor.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
When you make this dog treats recipe, there are a few things to keep in mind:
You can substitute maple syrup for the blackstrap molasses. Just use a little less maple syrup since it has a sweet flavor.
If you do not have oat flour, you can make it by placing old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.
You can substitute all purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. The amount will have to be adjusted since those flours will cause the dough to have a different consistency. It will take less of those flours than oat flour. Start with 1/2 cup and only add more if the dough is too wet or sticky. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these homemade dog treats. You can use any regular silicone candy mold but a dog paw print mold gives these treats a fun look.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Skillet
- Large Bowl
- Dog Treat Molds
- Baking Sheet or cookie sheets
How To Make Apple Carrot Dog Treats
These are the recipe steps and some photos of the process of making the treats. I hope they help you make this healthy dog treats recipe! Note there’s a printable recipe card below.
- Peel the apple, remove and discard the core of the apple, and shred the apple.
- Peel the carrot and shred it.
- Place the shredded apple, shredded carrot, applesauce, egg, melted coconut oil, and molasses in a large bowl.
- Stir to combine the wet ingredients.
- Mix the almond flour and oat flour together in a bowl.
- Add the flour mixture to the apple carrot mixture and combine well.
- Place the silicone mold on a baking sheet and fill in the cups with the dough.
- Bake at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes.
- Remove the treats from the oven and cool them on a wire rack.
Cut Out Treats
Don’t have any silicone molds? You can roll out the dough and use cookie cutters to cut the dough. Just add the oat flour a little at a time until it has a good rolling consistency that’s not too dry or wet.
Note it may be difficult to cut through the carrot shreds. You’ll have to press hard to get the cutter to go through the dough.
Place the dough on a floured surface and use a rolling pin to roll out the dough. Use cookie cutters for dog treats to cut out the treats. Or you can use a pizza cutter to cut square or rectangular treats.
Place the cutout treats on a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
Serving Size
How many homemade carrot dog treats should you give your pup at once? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Large dogs can consume more than smaller and toy breed dogs.
Treats should be considered in your dog’s daily caloric intake. Make sure you don’t exceed the recommended amount for your dog.
Dogs shouldn’t have too many treats – including these yummy carrot and apple dog treats. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat per day.
However, you can use your own judgment regarding how many treats are right for your dog.
Only give small amounts to senior dogs. If your furry companions are older, they might prefer a juicy dog treat to a crunchy one, but use your best judgment.

Renee’…Do you have a dog treat recipe that has carrots, unsweetened applesauce, oat flour, eggs in them? Optional ingredients of coconut flour and coconut oil are fine. I also need the GA for it. I have looked everywhere and can’t find the right recipe. I’m hoping you can help! I love your recipes.
Thanks,
Kim

Sorry Kim, I do not have a dog treat recipe with those ingredients. I will put it on my list of ideas for new treats.

Can I substitute Whole Wheat Flour to Almond Flour? Thank you!
Renee Dobbs says
Whole wheat flour is much denser than almond flour and not a good substitute for it alone. You can substitute the 2 cups of almond flour with 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup all-purpose flour.

Can I use gluten free flour in lieu of the oat and almond flour?
Renee Dobbs says
Yes you can. Gluten-free flour is safe for dogs to eat.
Irene Martens says
Hi,
your proportions are way off. I ended up with a extremely dry mixture. I should have known, since 1 egg, e tbls molassed and 1 tablespoon oil most certainly is not enough of moisture for 3 cups of flour. Apple and carrot do not contain much moisture. Will not make this again.
Thank you and respectfully, Irene Martens
Renee Dobbs says
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I checked the recipe and I had missed listing the applesauce (½ cup) in the ingredients and instructions. The recipe has been updated. now.

Does this recipe need to be refrigerated for storage or can it be in an airtight container/baggie?
Renee Dobbs says

Darlene Pieper says
Can I substitute olive oil for coconut oil?
Renee Dobbs says
