Benefits of Carob for Dogs

Carob is a natural, healthy, and safe alternative to chocolate for our furry friends. Here are some benefits of carob for dogs:

  • Unlike chocolate, which contains theobromine, a chemical toxic to dogs, carob is safe for dogs to consume in moderation.
  • Carob is a good source of calcium, potassium, and vitamin B6, which are all important for maintaining good health in dogs.
  • Carob is rich in fiber, which can help promote healthy digestion and regular bowel movements in dogs.
  • Carob contains antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative stress in dogs.
  • Carob contains natural sugars that can provide a quick boost of energy for dogs.

Benefits of Peanut Butter for Dogs

Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein for your best friend which helps maintain muscle mass and overall health. It has healthy fats good for maintaining a dog’s coat, skin, and joints.

Peanut butter has essential minerals and vitamins including magnesium, iron, selenium, vitamin B, and vitamin E.

Always remember to use natural peanut butter without salt, sugar, or artificial sweeteners. One sweetener in particular, xylitol, is toxic to dogs.

If your dog loves peanut butter, make some frozen peanut butter dog treats for hot days! They will love them!

Recipe Ingredients

The entire list of ingredients, quantities of each, and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post – including nutritional information. First, I want to share a bit more information about the ingredients I used in the best homemade carob chip cookies for dogs you’ll ever make.

Here’s a list of what you need for this carob dog biscuit recipe. You can find everything in regular grocery stores. If you want to make organic dog treats, make sure you use organic ingredients.

  • Oat Flour – Healthy gluten-free flour with lots of vitamins and nutrients.
  • Brown Rice Flour – Another healthy flour that is also gluten-free. Adds a nutty flavor.
  • Carob Powder – The primary flavor of the treats.
  • Egg – Adds protein and acts as a binder to hold everything together.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds moisture to the dough and a little natural sweetness.
  • Pumpkin Puree – Adds moisture to the dough and healthy veggie nutrition.
  • Natural Unsweetened Creamy Peanut Butter – Adds healthy fats and protein.
  • Unsweetened Carob Chips – An optional ingredient in case you want carob chip dog treats.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this easy recipe for carob dog biscuits, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.

You can make your own oat flour by placing uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.

You can also make your own brown rice flour by placing uncooked brown rice in a food processor or blender and blending it until it has a flour consistency.

If you use any other type of flour, such as all-purpose flour, barley flour, or whole wheat flour, the end results may vary due to the difference in the flour. They will not be gluten-free if using flour made from wheat.

If you can’t find unsweetened carob chips at your grocery store, you can get these unsweetened carob chips for dogs on Amazon.

Do not substitute carob powder with cocoa powder or carob chips with chocolate chips. Both cocoa powder and chocolate chips are toxic to dogs.

If you want to add some vitamin E and healthy fats, add a tiny bit of coconut oil to the treats. You only need a tiny amount.

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these carob dog cookies. You can use any cookie cutter of your choice, but cute cookie cutters, dog cookie cutters, or ones shaped like dog bones give these treats a fun look.

The number of dog treats this recipe makes depends on if you are using a large or small cookie cutter (or both).

Serving Size

How many homemade dog treats should you give to your canine companion? That depends on what else they ate that day because you need to consider their entire calorie intake as a whole. Being mindful of a dog’s food consumption is just as important as it is with a human family member.

It also depends on the size of your dog. Small dogs need fewer calories than larger dogs. Maintaining a dog’s healthy weight is important, so keep that in mind when feeding your dog treats in addition to their regular food.

Dogs shouldn’t consume too many carbs, including healthy homemade dog treats. For this reason, I suggest only giving your pup one treat per day. Or perhaps two on special days.

How to Store Homemade Carob Dog Treats

Store baked dog treats at room temperature in an airtight container for dog treats. A dog treat jar is a good idea so they are not mistaken for human cookies. Here are some cute ones on Amazon:

  • Metal Farmhouse Style Dog Treats Jar
  • Rae Dunn Good Dog Ceramic Dog Treats Canister
  • Clear Plastic Paw Print Air-tight Container

How long do homemade carob dog treats last?

These homemade carob dog treats will last up to 5 days when stored at room temperature in a sealed container.

For longer storage, place them in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag and freeze them. They will last up to 4 months when frozen. You can also use a vacuum sealer if you have one.

Note that it also depends on how many dogs you have, how many treats you give them, and how often.

Can humans eat these carob treats for dogs?

They sure can! Everything in these dog treats with carob powder is safe for human consumption. However, I doubt folks would like them because they’re not sweet like carob cookies for humans.
