Why Make Blueberry Pie for Your Dog?
Homemade blueberry dog treats allow you to share something sweet with your pet. I know the feeling when you browse the treats at the store – meat sticks, jerky, even savory biscuits. Where are the sweeter things? Well, now you can make it at home!
A lot of treats at the store have unhealthy ingredients in them. When you make treats with fresh berries, you’ll know you’re giving your fur baby the very best!
Regular blueberry pies made for people have ingredients that can be harmful to dogs. These are a few of them:
- Lemon Juice and Lemon Zest – Both are toxic to dogs.
- Salt – Even a little salt isn’t good for dogs.
- Sugar – They can have up to a cup of sugar (white and/or brown sugar) which is way too much for dogs.
Benefits of Blueberries for Dogs
Blueberries offer a wealth of nutritional benefits for our canine companions, promoting overall well-being and vitality.
- Rich in Essential Vitamins: Blueberries are packed with essential vitamins such as B6, C, and K, bolstering your dog’s immune system and contributing to their overall health.
- Antioxidant Powerhouse: Loaded with antioxidants, blueberries combat harmful free radicals, supporting cognitive health and serving as an excellent dietary addition for senior dogs.
- Mineral-Rich: Blueberries boast an array of essential minerals, including calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc, vital for maintaining various bodily functions.
- Promotes Gut Health: Blueberries are beneficial for gut health, fostering a balanced microbiome and aiding in digestion due to their rich fiber content.
- Digestive Support: The fiber content in blueberries aids in regulating digestion, promoting a healthy gastrointestinal tract.
- Natural Sweetness: Blueberries provide a source of natural sugar, offering a healthier alternative to processed sugars, making them a delicious and nutritious treat option for your furry friend.

The detailed ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I want to share a list and some information about the natural ingredients in this dog pie recipe.
- Oat Flour – The base of the crust.
- Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds flavor and natural sweetness to the crust.
- Large Egg – Binds the crust and adds protein.
- Frozen Blueberries – The star of the pies!
- Frozen Banana – To thicken the filling.
- Coconut Milk – To give the filling a creamy texture and healthy fats.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic pies.
You don’t have to use blueberries. You can substitute them with other berries or a combination of them.
You can substitute oat flour with brown rice flour. You can make them by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats or brown rice in a food processor or blender and processing until it reaches flour consistency.
If your dog can digest wheat flour, you can substitute the oat flour in the crust with regular all-purpose flour or a 50/50 combination of all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour.
Equipment Needed
You probably have all the kitchen items to make the pies, but just in case:
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Mixing Bowl
- Jumbo Muffin Pan
- Blender – a high-powered one is best
You can use a regular muffin tin or silicone molds for 3-inch cakes or tarts. If using a regular muffin pan, you’ll make 6 pies and the baking time for the crust will need to be reduced.
How to Make Blueberry Pie for Dogs
These are the recipe steps and photos of the process of making these pies for your furry friend. I hope they help you make this recipe.
Recipe Prep – The Day Before
Freeze banana slices to speed up the process. Likewise if you have fresh blueberries and you want to use them.
Set the coconut milk on the counter. You want the coconut water and solids (cream) to be separated. You’ll only be using the solid cream. Do not shake the can before opening it and do not stir it after opening.
To make the pie crust:
- Place the oat flour, applesauce, and egg in a bowl.
- Stir to mix the ingredients until well combined.
- Spoon the mixture into 4 cups of a jumbo muffin pan. Use a spoon to press it into the bottom and up the sides to create a well.
- Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
- Cool the crusts to room temperature and remove them from the pan.
To make the filling:
- Open the can of coconut milk and scoop out 1/2 cup of the solid cream.
- Place the coconut cream, blueberries, and bananas in a blender.
- Blend until combined. Add a bit of water if it won’t blend but not too much because it needs to be thick.
- Spoon the mixture into the pie crusts.
- Freeze the pies for about 30 minutes, just until the filling is set. It does not have to be frozen solid.
- Garnish with fresh whole blueberries and/or a dollop of plain Greek yogurt if desired.
Serving Size
How much blueberry pie should you give your dog at once? It depends on the size of your dog and what else you gave your pet to eat that day. This might be a healthy dessert for dogs, but too much of it is not a good thing.
Treats should not make up the majority of your dog’s calorie intake. Only give your dog small quantities as you do with other treats.
For this reason, I suggest giving your spoiled hound only one pie or a portion of a pie for smaller dogs.
When introducing new foods or treats to your dog, only give small amounts and watch to make sure there are no adverse reactions. Consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions about giving your dog this pie with your dog’s specific health considerations.
How to Store the Pie and How Long It Lasts
Place the pies in an airtight container. Store them in the refrigerator. They will last up to 4 days.
You can also freeze the pies. Place them on a baking sheet with room between them. Freeze until solid, about 2 hours. Transfer the frozen pies to a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag. They will last up to 3 months in the freezer.
Can people eat these pies for dogs?
Yes, absolutely! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They would be a great dessert treat for anyone watching their sugar intake.
