Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Indulging your furry friend with this homemade blueberry pie is not just a treat for them, but also a joy for you. Here’s why this recipe is a win-win:

Wholesome Ingredients – These little pies are made with real food and no weird additives. You’ll recognize every single ingredient, unlike those store-bought treats with mystery stuff you can’t even pronounce.

Easy to Make – This recipe comes together just like making mini pies for people. The crust bakes up quickly, and the filling is as easy as blend and spoon. No fancy skills required!

Simple to Customize – Use what you have on hand or tweak the recipe to fit your dog’s taste or dietary needs. Got strawberries instead of blueberries? No problem!

Perfect for Special Occasions – These mini pies make such a fun dessert for birthdays, Gotcha Days, holidays, or anytime you feel like making your pup feel extra loved.

Freezer-Friendly – These adorable mini pies can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the freezer, providing a convenient option for busy pet parents or special occasions.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

These pies are made with simple, dog-friendly ingredients that taste great and bring something good to the mix.

  • Oat Flour – A great gluten-free option that is the base of the crust.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds natural sweetness and moisture to the crust.
  • Egg – Helps bind the crust together so it holds its shape.
  • Frozen Blueberries – The star of the pie! Bursting with flavor and packed with nutrients.
  • Frozen Bananas – Naturally sweet and creamy, they help thicken the filling.
  • Coconut Milk – The thick, creamy part from canned coconut milk makes the filling smooth and luscious.
  • Fresh Blueberries or Plain Greek Yogurt (optional) – Fun garnishes for topping the pies before serving.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are a few important things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • You can use fresh blueberries, but you’ll need to freeze them first so the filling blends thick and creamy.
  • No blueberries? Try raspberries, strawberries, or a mix of berries instead.
  • You can substitute oat flour with brown rice flour. Just blend brown rice or oats in a blender or food processor until you get a fine flour.
  • If your dog can digest wheat, you can use all-purpose flour or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat for the crust.

Equipment Needed

You likely have the kitchen items you need for making the pies. If you don’t have a jumbo muffin pan, you can use a regular muffin pan or 3-inch silicone cake molds. If using a regular muffin pan or molds, you’ll make 6 pies, and the baking time for the crust will need to be reduced.

How to Make Blueberry Pie for Dogs

Making this recipe for a cute and tasty doggy dessert is a breeze! Here’s what to do:

The day before – Prep the berries and coconut milk:

  1. Freeze the banana slices.
  2. Freeze fresh blueberries if you’re not using frozen ones.
  3. Set the canned coconut milk on the counter and don’t shake it. You want the cream and water to separate so you can scoop just the solid cream.

The day of – Make the crust:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the oat flour, applesauce, and egg until combined.
  3. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of the mixture into 4 cups of a jumbo muffin pan.
  4. Use the back of a spoon to press the dough down and up the sides to form little crusts.
  5. Bake for 15–18 minutes, then let them cool completely before removing from the pan.

Make the filling:

  1. Scoop out the solid cream from the top of the coconut milk (don’t use the liquid).
  2. Add the coconut cream, frozen blueberries, and frozen banana slices to a blender.
  3. Blend until smooth and thick. You can add a tiny splash of water if needed to help it blend.
  4. Spoon the filling into each crust.
  5. Place the pies in the freezer for 30 minutes to help them set.

When serving – Garnish (optional):

  1. Top with fresh blueberries, a little dollop of plain Greek yogurt, or both.

How to Store the Pies and How Long They Last

Keep the pies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To freeze: Place the pies on a baking sheet, spaced apart, and freeze until solid (about 2 hours). Then transfer them to a freezer-safe container or zip-top freezer bag. They’ll keep for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 3/4 cup Oat Flour
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Applesauce
  • 1 Egg

Filling

  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Coconut Milk Cream see notes below
  • 3/4 cup Frozen Blueberries
  • 1/4 cup Frozen Bananas

Garnish

  • Fresh blueberries and/or Greek Yogurt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Prepare the crust: In a mixing bowl, combine oat flour, applesauce, and egg.
  • Place approximately 2 tablespoons of crust mixture into 4 of the cups in a jumbo muffin pan.
  • Use a small spoon to press down the center of the dough and up around the sides to form a shallow well.
  • Bake crusts for 15-18 minutes. Then remove from oven and cool completely.
  • Remove the crusts from the pan and place them on a plate.
  • Prepare the filling: Spoon the solid coconut cream from the can of coconut milk. Do not use the liquid.
  • Place coconut cream, frozen blueberries, and bananas in a blender. You may need to add a tiny amount of water to make the mixture blend better. Don’t add too much because you want it to be thick.
  • Once blended, spoon about two tablespoons of filling into each crust. Place the pies in the freezer for 30 minutes to set.
  • If desired, garnish with fresh blueberries and/or a small dollop of plain Greek yogurt.
  • Store the pies in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze them for up to 3 months.

Notes

To prepare the coconut milk, don’t shake the can and leave it sitting for at least one day to allow the cream and liquid to separate. The cream should rise to the top.

Serving Amount

These pies are meant to be special dessert treats, not everyday snacks. And too much dessert is not a good thing. Here’s a general guide on how much pie to give your dog:

  • Small dogs: ¼ of the pie
  • Medium dogs: ½ to 1 pie
  • Large dogs: 1 whole pie

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. If you’re not sure how much is right for your dog, check with your vet.

Also, if your dog hasn’t had any of these ingredients before, start with a small amount to make sure there are no allergies or sensitivities.
