Your dog is going to love this apple pie! And you won’t mind making it because it is so simple. And when you sit down a piece of apple pie, you can give your dog a slice of pie that is good for your dog’s health.

Whether you are making this for a special treat, Gotcha Day, or a birthday, your dog will be so happy with this delicious dessert.

When you want something special for your dog, this is the best of all dog apple pie recipes! Oh, and the soft texture makes it great for older dogs.

You may already have all of the ingredients for this dog-friendly apple pie. I used regular pantry items and simple ingredients found in grocery stores in this recipe. None of these ingredients require special ordering or trips to specialty markets.

Why Make Apple Pie For Dogs?

It’s always best to make your dog their own food instead of sharing human food with them – especially when it comes to desserts.

Human apple pie is not good for dogs. It has a lot of sugar and dogs shouldn’t consume large amounts of sugary desserts. Too much sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues. It’s a better idea to give your pet desserts with limited sugar content.

Many common ingredients found in apple pies are harmful or toxic ingredients for dogs. One of the bad ingredients in apple pie spice is nutmeg. Dogs can get nutmeg poisoning with just a small amount of it.

Human apple pie filling can cause an adverse reaction in dogs. Some dangerous symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as an upset stomach. This is why it is best to make an apple pie with dog-safe ingredients.

Benefits of Apples for Dogs

Apples are not only a delicious fruit for humans, but they can also be beneficial for dogs. Here are some health benefits of apples for dogs:

  • Apples are a great source of fiber, which can aid in a dog’s digestion. It may help regulate bowel movements and could assist in maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Apples contain a variety of vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium. These nutrients are beneficial for a dog’s overall health, including the immune system, skin, and coat health.
  • Apples are packed with antioxidants, which can help protect against cellular damage and boost the immune system.

Ingredients

The detailed ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share a list and some information about the wholesome ingredients in this recipe. This delicious treat is made with these basic ingredients:

For the pie crust:

  • Oat Flour – The base of the crust.
  • Coconut Oil – A healthy fat.
  • Water – Adds moisture to help hold the crust together.

For the apple pie filling:

  • Unsweetened Applesauce – The key ingredient and star of the pie!
  • Egg – Adds protein and gives it a smooth and rich texture.
  • Cornstarch – Thickens the filling.
  • Ground Cinnamon – For flavor.

Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic pies.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this apple pie, there are a few things to keep in mind.

You can substitute applesauce with a finely chopped fresh apple.

Check out my applesauce for dogs recipe to use for making the pies.

Cinnamon is safe for dogs in small quantities. How much cinnamon a dog can have is less than 1 teaspoon of powder. The pie filling only has ¼ of a teaspoon. Do not allow your dog to eat a cinnamon stick.

It’s easy to make your own oat flour. All you have to do is place uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender or food processor and blend until it reaches flour consistency.

And if your dog can digest flour just fine, you can substitute the oat flour in the crust with regular all-purpose flour or a 50/50 combination of all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour. You can also use almond flour, just note it will add a lot of fat and calories.

Coconut flour is not recommended for making the crust. It will be too dry and won’t hold up correctly.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make this cake. But just in case, here’s a list:

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Mixing Bowls
  • 6 Cup Muffin Pan

Serving Size

How much apple pie should you give your dog at once? It depends on the size of your dog and what else you gave your pet to eat that day. This might be a healthy dessert for dogs, but too much of it is not a good thing.

Treats should not make up the majority of your dog’s calorie intake. Only give your dog small quantities of this healthy treat – just like you do with other treats.

For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound only one pie or a portion of a pie for mini or toy breeds.

And always remember when introducing your dog to new foods, to only give small amounts to see how your dog handles it and to make sure there are no adverse reactions.

How to Store Apple Pie

Place the pies in an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator.

For longer storage, you can freeze the pies in a freezer-safe container.

How long does homemade apple pie last?

When apple pie is stored in the fridge should last up to 5 days.

Apple pie stored in the freezer should last up to 3 months.

Can you eat this dog apple pie?

Oh yes! You can eat this apple pie! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. But I doubt you would enjoy it since it’s not sweet. I suggest making a regular apple pie to enjoy and share with family and friends.
