Benefits of Bison for Dogs

Bison is a lean, nutrient-rich protein that’s perfect for dogs. It’s packed with essential amino acids, iron, and B vitamins to support muscle health, energy levels, and overall well-being. Plus, bison is a great alternative for dogs with sensitivities to more common proteins like chicken or beef.

Ingredients

These bison meatballs have simple, dog-safe ingredients that pack a nutritional punch. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground bison: The star of the dish!
  • Egg: Adds protein and helps bind the meatballs.
  • Old-fashioned oats: Gentle on digestion and a great source of fiber.
  • Carrot: Adds a hint of natural sweetness and important vitamins like beta-carotene.
  • Frozen green peas: A low-calorie source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Plain Greek yogurt: Creamy and adds a little moisture to the mix.
  • Fresh curly parsley: Helps freshen breath and is rich in antioxidants.
  • Dried rosemary: A dog-safe herb that adds flavor and is packed with antioxidants.
  • Fresh mint: Another breath-freshening herb that’s safe for dogs.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is flexible and easy to adapt. Here are a few ways you can change it up:

Protein swaps: Use lamb, venison, chicken, turkey, or lean ground beef instead of bison.

Veggie swaps: Replace the carrot or peas with any dog-safe vegetable, like zucchini, sweet potato, or green beans.

How to Make Bison Meatballs for Dogs

Making these meatballs is as easy as mixing, rolling, and baking!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Use your hands or a spoon to mix everything until evenly combined.
  3. Scoop out 1½ to 2 tablespoons of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
  4. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Allow the meatballs to cool completely before serving them to your pup.

Serving Size

How many meatballs should your dog enjoy? That depends on their size, breed, and activity level:

  • As treats: Meatballs should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.
  • As a meal: A general guide is 1 cup per 20 pounds of body weight.

Always start with small amounts when introducing new foods to ensure there are no allergic or adverse reactions. Consult your veterinarian for personalized portion recommendations.

How to Store the Meatballs and How Long They Last

Refrigerator: Store cooled meatballs in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Freezer: Arrange meatballs on a baking sheet with space between them and freeze for 2 hours or until solid. Transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

Warming tip: You can slightly warm the meatballs in the microwave or oven, but don’t serve them hot.

Can people eat these meatballs?

Yes! These meatballs are made with human-safe ingredients, so you’re welcome to give them a try. For extra flavor, you might want to add a little seasoning like salt and pepper if you’re serving them for yourself.
