Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s something so rewarding about making your dog a batch of homemade treats, and your pup gets to enjoy something made with love. There are so many reasons this ground lamb dog treat recipe will be a favorite:

Wholesome Ingredients – These treats are made with real food you recognize. There are no mystery fillers or additives in sight.

Novel Protein – Using lamb makes these perfect for dogs who can’t tolerate chicken or beef.

Easy to Make – Just mix up the ingredients, press into molds, and bake. No need to roll out or cut dough like with cookies.

Simple to Customize – You can easily swap out ingredients to fit with what you have on hand or to suit your dog’s taste preferences.

High-Protein Treats – Packed with lamb and egg, these are high-value, meaty treats that are great for training or just because.

Economical – Homemade treats like these cost less than fancy store-bought ones and stretch your dollar further.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

You don’t need a long list to make something great. Just a few simple ingredients come together to make these delicious lamb treats. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground Lamb – The star of the show! A flavorful, protein-rich meat dogs go crazy for.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds moisture and a little natural sweetness.
  • Fresh Mint – Offers that classic pairing with lamb and may help freshen breath.
  • Egg – Helps bind the mixture and adds extra protein.
  • Oat Flour – Gives structure to the treats while keeping them gluten-free.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Lamb – You can substitute lamb with ground chicken, turkey, bison, or lean ground beef if your dog prefers a different protein or has dietary needs.
  • Applesauce – Swap with pumpkin purée, plain mashed sweet potato, or mashed banana if desired.
  • Oat Flour – Make your own by blending uncooked old-fashioned oats in a blender or food processor until it reaches a flour consistency. (1 cup of oats yields about 3/4 cup of flour.)
  • Other Flours – You can also use rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 blend of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour on its own may be too dense for this recipe.

Equipment Needed

You likely have everything you need in your kitchen already, and silicone molds make shaping super easy. These dog treat molds make them extra cute.

How to Make Lamb Dog Treats

Making these treats is as easy as mixing everything together and popping them in the oven. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and get your silicone molds ready on a baking sheet.
  2. Mix the lamb, applesauce, egg, and mint in a large bowl until well combined.
  3. Add the oat flour and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Press the dough into the molds.
  5. Bake for 17–20 minutes, or until the centers reach 160°F.
  6. Cool completely, then pop the treats out of the molds.

Recipe Variation – Meatballs

Don’t have silicone molds? No problem! You can roll the lamb mixture into small meatballs and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet instead. Just be sure they’re evenly sized for consistent baking.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 5 months. Just thaw before serving.

Can people eat these treats?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re simple, savory, and perfect for anyone who likes meaty snacks. So go ahead, give one a try.
