How safe is it? Can dogs eat star fruit? Should they? Read this guide before sharing this exotic fruit with your dog.

If you’re curious about fruit for your dog, keep reading. This guide will look at the fruit itself and the safety of food products made with star fruit.

For ultimate pet safety, please ask your vet any questions you have regarding your dog eating star fruit.

What Is Star Fruit

Also called carambola, Star fruit is a tropical fruit that really does look like a five-point star. It tastes both sweet and sour and has edible skin and flesh. It is native to Southeast Asia, so you won’t find it very often in America (although more grocery stores are starting to import it).

Star Fruit Health Benefits

This is a healthy fruit for humans, but it is toxic to dogs. It has a really high fiber content, so it’s good for a human’s gut health. It’s also an excellent source of vitamin C. Star fruit also has lots of antioxidants in it that help us maintain lower cholesterol levels.

Star fruit is fantastic for a human’s immune system.

Remember, these are health benefits for humans, not dogs or other small animals.

Can Dogs Eat Star Fruit

No, this is not a safe fruit for dogs to eat, even on an occasional basis. Large amounts could be fatal to dogs – especially senior dogs.

The oxalate salts in star fruit can cause acute kidney injury in dogs. Another danger of oxalic acid is that it can bind to minerals in the gut and prevent the body from absorbing them.

This toxic substance can hurt your dog, even if they eat as little as an ounce of it. Further below, I’ll list all the harmful effects that your dog might experience if they eat even a few small pieces.

Is Star Fruit Safe For Dogs

No, star fruit is not safe for dogs. Dog owners should not let their dogs eat even a small amount of it or any food items that are made with it.

In addition to containing soluble oxalates that are poisonous to dogs, it also has soluble calcium oxalate crystals. This can cause irritation in your dog’s mouth and cause their calcium levels to drop significantly.

The short answer is that dogs should never eat star fruit of any form.

Star Fruit Poisoning In Dogs

Carambola fruit contains a substance that could poison your dog.

The most common danger of star fruit for dogs is acute kidney failure. Other health issues it could contribute to include:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Excessive Thirst
  • Kidney Damage
  • Sudden Drop In Calcium
  • Acute Renal Failure
  • Stomach upset

What To Do If A Dog Eats Star Fruit

If your furry friend eats star fruit, contact your dog’s veterinarian immediately – especially if you think they ate large quantities of it.

The veterinarian will do a quick exam of your dog to check their heart rate and breathing to make sure it’s not too fast or too slow.

After that, they will look for symptoms of the adverse effects listed above and treat them.

In extreme cases star fruit poisoning could lead to death, so please contact your dog’s veterinarian if you think they ate this fruit.

Final Thoughts

The good news is that star fruit won’t kill your dog immediately. Even if your dog sneaks a bite of star fruit without you knowing, you still have time to get them to the veterinarian and get treatment. It might be a great snack for humans, but it is not good for dogs.
