The exotic durian fruit has such an overpowering smell that most airplanes won’t let you eat it on a flight. It’s safe to eat, it just stinks! If it’s safe for humans, is it safe for dogs too?

For ultimate pet safety, I recommend consulting with your vet about all the questions you have about your dog eating durian.

Can Dogs Eat Durian

The durian fruit comes from Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. It’s mostly known for its really pungent odor that is compared to Limberger cheese. Despite this super-smelly nature, it has a mild and sweet flavor.

The custard-like pulp can be eaten raw, roasted, or used in different foods.

Yes, you can safely give your dog a small amount of durian fruit. However, you must be very careful and watch how they react to it.

Since this is such a different fruit from anything they became accustomed to, it’s very possible that their bodies won’t react well to it. The fruit itself isn’t toxic, but they might have a bad reaction anyways.

When you let your dog eat a tiny amount of durian, look out for signs like vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, loose or bloody stool, or constipation.

Most dogs won’t have allergic reactions to it, but if they have too much durian, they might still have adverse reactions to it – especially to the strong smell.

Is Durian Good For Dogs

There are health benefits of this smelly fruit. It is known as the king of fruits in fact. It has a lot of vitamin C, folic acid, and vitamin A. The fleshy part of the fruit is full of important minerals, including dietary fiber.

Durian flesh is also high in natural sugars, so it’s best to only give your dog small quantities at a time. If they eat too much, they will have diarrhea or loose bowel movements.

There are easier ways to give your dog the essential minerals they need for their energy levels. Even though this is a nutritious fruit, the vast majority of dogs will not like how it smells. The flesh of the durian fruit is extremely stinky!

Can Dogs Eat Durian Seeds

No, dogs can not eat the durian seeds. Be very careful when you let your dogs eat durian and make sure you remove all the seeds first.

According to Durian Delivery, these seeds have high availability of cyanide in them. This is toxic to their brains and if they eat enough of them it could lead to death. You might already be familiar with cyanide as a poisonous agent and a dangerous chemical compound.

If you are afraid that your dog ate some seeds, look for the following symptoms and take them to the veterinarian right away:

  • Rapid and weighty breathing
  • Skin defects
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Dizziness

Can Dogs Eat Durian Ice Cream

Since it doesn’t have seeds in it, durian ice cream is mostly safe for dogs. You still need to be very careful. Watch your dog for signs of lactose intolerance. This includes bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

If your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, then it is probably safe to give them durian ice cream in moderation. Even so, the high sugar content of this ice cream means it should still be an occasional treat.

You’ll also need to watch their sugar consumption. Eating large amounts of sugar – just like in humans – could lead to obesity and other health problems.

Can Dogs Eat Durian Candy

The durian in the candy isn’t what is harmful to the dogs. Watch out for how much candy your dog eats because of the sugar content. As a general rule, you should only give your dog moderate amounts of anything with lots of sugar in it.

Make sure that the candy doesn’t have xylitol in it. Xylitol can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop and could even lead to liver failure.

Cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup is safe in small amounts. Excessive amounts of sugar can cause inflammation and pain in your dog.

Dogs and Durian: Final Thoughts

As you can see, dogs are safe to eat durian in small amounts and without the seeds. Since they smell so strong, most dogs won’t want to eat them. They have sensitive noses and might react to the odor.

If you want to let your dog taste durian, remove all the seeds first and only give them the fresh or roasted fruit. Avoid giving them durian ice cream or candy.
