It’s so much fun to share your food with your pet. Honeydew is a fruit that is super healthy for us humans. But is it safe for our dogs?

The good news is that honeydew melon is safe to give your dog in small amounts. A healthy diet for dogs is one that is high in protein, so they don’t need as much fiber or natural sugars as our bodies do.

For this reason, you should limit how much melon you give your dog and how frequently. As with all high-fiber fruits and vegetables, too much of them might give your dog an upset stomach and loose stools. They are very sensitive to fiber.

Is Honeydew Good For Dogs

Yes, honeydew melon is good for dogs – just be careful because too much of a good thing is still too much.

Here’s how honeydew melon is good for dogs. It has a really high amount of juice and water in it, which will help to keep your pup hydrated.

It is also really good for your pet’s immune system. Honeydew is high in vitamin C and potassium.

Is Honeydew Safe For Dogs

The melon itself is safe for dogs. What’s unsafe is the rind and the seeds. Melon seeds can get stuck in your dog’s digestive tract or post a choking hazard.

The rind is also very tough and difficult for dogs to digest. If your dog swallows a large piece of the rind it could get stuck in their intestines.

Is Honeydew Melon Bad For Dogs

The fruit itself is safe for dogs. As long as you remove the seeds and the rind, the fruit itself isn’t bad for dogs.

It is pretty high in natural sugars. If you already gave your dog a lot of other high-calorie or high-sugar foods, cut back on how much honeydew they eat.

Dogs that eat lots of sugars and calories – even from natural sources like fruit – are at a higher risk for weight gain and related health effects.

Can My Dog Eat Honeydew Melon

Yes, your dog can safely eat honeydew melon. Remove the seeds first. Then, use a melon baller to scoop out bite-sizes pieces for your dog to munch on.

The bite-sized pieces also allow you to control how much of the melon you give your dog.

How Much Honeydew Can Dogs Eat

So, when dogs eat honeydew, how much of it is safe to give them at one time?

That answer depends on your dog’s current diet and food sensitivities.

If your pet already eats a lot of sugar and calories, then you should give them less honeydew. If they are sensitive to fiber and sugar, then you should probably give them a lot less.

On the flip side, if your dog doesn’t eat a lot of sugar already, they can indulge in a little more melon. The safe amount at once is probably 1/4 and no more than 1/2 of a melon at once for medium or large dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Golden Honeydew

The main difference between golden honeydew and typical honeydew is the color of the skin. Golden honey melons have a golden exterior. Seems obvious.

They are just as safe and healthy as the typical honeydew. Just like the other one, remove the rind and seeds and cut it up into bite-sized pieces.

Can Dogs Eat Honeydew Rinds

No, dogs should not eat honeydew rinds. The rinds are much too tough for their bodies to digest. It could get stuck in their intestines or cause them to choke.

Can Dogs Eat Honeydew Melon Seeds

No, dogs should not eat honeydew melon seeds. Seeds can cause digestive issues and upset your dog’s stomach. It’s a good idea to remove all the seeds before you allow your dog to eat the melon.

Final Thoughts

Honeydew makes a safe and healthy treat for dogs, especially if you use them in place of high-calorie dog treats that are made with mainly corn or rice.

Put a few pieces of them in the freezer and give it to them on a hot day. Since this melon is 90% water, it’s a fantastic way to help them stay hydrated.

Always remember to remove the seeds and rind first. If your dog is showing signs of loose stool, give them less honeydew melon next time.
