Can dogs have cinnamon in dog treats?
It’s a common question and the answer is yes. Cinnamon is only harmful to dogs if they eat a large quantity of it. The Pet Poison Helpline states that it takes more than 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to cause problems for most pets. Many major pet food brands have dog treats with cinnamon, including Blue Buffalo, Bocce’s Bakery, Milk Bone, and Three Dog Bakery.
These treats have 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in a batch of 24 which would be only 0.04 teaspoon in one treat.
Ingredients
You only need five simple ingredients to make these snickerdoodle cookies for dogs. The full recipe with exact ingredient amounts is in the printable recipe card below. But first, a little about each one:
- Cinnamon – the star of the treats!
- Honey – to add a little natural sweetness
- Egg – binds the dough and adds protein
- Coconut Milk – adds moisture to the dough and has healthy fats
- Brown Rice Flour – an easily digestible flour for dogs
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
You can make brown rice flour by placing uncooked brown rice in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour. One cup of rice makes about 1½ cups of flour.
You can substitute rice flour with oat flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself. Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much liquid and the treats won’t come out right.
How to Make Snickerdoodle Dog Treats
These are the recipe steps and some photos of making the treats. I hope they help you make them for your dog.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with silicone mats or parchment paper.
- Put the coconut milk, honey, and egg in a mixing bowl.
- Stir until it is well combined.
- Add the rice flour and cinnamon.
- Stir or use a mixer to combine into a dough.
- Roll the dough into 1½-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
- Use a fork to flatten the balls into a cookie shape, making a crisscross pattern.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
- Cool the treats on the baking sheet.
If you want to make the cookies in a different size, then just roll the dough into smaller or larger balls. Remember to adjust the baking time as needed, less time for smaller ones and more for larger ones.
Serving Size
How many homemade treats should you give your fur baby? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Larger dogs can consume more than smaller dogs. Keep within your dog’s recommended daily calories to maintain a healthy weight.
I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat per day. However, you can use your judgment or consult with your veterinarian regarding how many treats are right for your dog.
Also, keep in mind when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to start with small amounts to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions.
How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last
Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature. They will last up to 1 week.
For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Can people eat these treats?
Yes, they sure can! All of the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They would be great cookies for people who are watching their sugar intake. Give one a try – you may enjoy it.
