Great for Dogs Allergic to Chicken – Quail eggs are a wonderful alternative for dogs with chicken egg sensitivities.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Each ingredient plays an important role in creating crunchy, flavorful dog treats.

  • Quail eggs provide protein and help bind the dough together.
  • Pumpkin puree adds fiber and moisture while supporting digestion.
  • Peanut butter adds protein, richness, and flavor that dogs love.
  • Unsweetened applesauce helps keep the dough workable and adds light natural sweetness.
  • Oat flour creates a sturdy base and is easily digestible by dogs.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is flexible, with several easy swaps depending on what you have on hand.

  • Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.
  • Peanut butter can be replaced with almond butter or sunflower seed butter as long as it is xylitol-free.
  • Do not use pumpkin pie mix, as it may contain spices that are toxic to dogs.
  • Pumpkin puree can be substituted with mashed sweet potato or butternut squash.
  • Applesauce can be replaced with mashed banana.
  • Six quail eggs can be substituted with two chicken eggs if needed.
  • Oat flour can be made by blending old-fashioned rolled oats until a flour consistency is reached. One cup of oats makes about three-fourths cup of flour.
  • Brown rice flour can be used instead of oat flour and made by blending uncooked brown rice.
  • All-purpose flour or a 50-50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour can replace oat flour. Whole wheat flour alone is too dense to use by itself.
  • Flour substitutions may affect the dough. Start with less and add more as needed to create a rollable dough.

Equipment Needed

You likely already have everything you need to make these treats. Any cookie cutter works well, but a bone-shaped cutter makes them extra cute.

How to Make Quail Egg Dog Treats

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
  2. Place the quail eggs, pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and applesauce in a bowl and mix well.
  3. Add the oat flour and stir until a dough forms.
