The Best Things About Pumpkin Bread For Dogs

Have you ever sat down with a slice of homemade bread, only to have your four-legged friend beg with those sad little eyes? When you make a dog pumpkin bread, you can give your pup their own slice to enjoy. In fact, homemade treats are the best kind for them!

Not only does giving your dog bread make it feel like they are sharing breakfast or snack time with you, but it’s good for your dog, too. This dog bread recipe is made with natural ingredients, which are fantastic for your pet’s health.

This is a great recipe for homemade bread. It’s made without any artificial sweeteners, which are unsafe for dogs. In fact, xylitol is highly toxic to dogs.

This bread is also made without pumpkin pie spice, which is a blend containing spices toxic to dogs.

Pumpkin Dog Bread Recipe Ingredients

The entire list of ingredients, step-by-step directions, nutritional information, and calorie count are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some additional information about the simple ingredients I used in this dog-friendly bread recipe.

Here’s a list of what you need. If you want to make organic dog bread, you must use organic ingredients.

  • Canned Pumpkin Purée – The main flavor of the bread.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds moisture to the batter and a little sweetness to the bread.
  • Eggs – Bind the batter and add protein.
  • Coconut Oil – A little bit of this oil gives the bread some healthy fats.
  • Oat Flour – A healthy flour that’s great for making dog treats.
  • Baking Soda – Helps the bread rise and gives it a light texture.
  • Baking Powder – Another leavening agent to help the bread rise and have an airy texture.

Ingredient Notes

When you make this easy dog bread recipe, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Be sure to use plain pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. This is because pumpkin pie filling contains spices toxic to dogs.

Baking soda and baking powder are safe for dogs in small amounts. They’ll only be eating a minute amount in a piece of the bread.

You can make oat flour by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats in a blender or food processor and blending until it reaches a fine powder consistency.

You can make this pumpkin bread with regular flour, like all-purpose flour. If you want to use whole wheat flour, you will need to reduce the amount to 2/3 cup of flour or less and possibly need to add some water if the batter is too dry.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make the bread. But just in case, here’s a list of them:

  • Blender or Food Processor if you want to turn oatmeal into flour instead of buying a package that is more expensive.
  • Measuring Cups – for measuring.
  • Mixing Bowl – to mix the batter in.
  • Hand Mixer – for mixing the batter.
  • 9×13-inch Loaf Pan – to bake the bread.
  • Wire Cooling Rack – for cooling the bread.

Serving Size

How much homemade dog bread should you give your dog at once?

A slice of the bread is about 2½ x ½ inches. Medium to large dogs can have one slice, but a small dog should only get half of a slice. Always be mindful of how many treats you give to your dog.

Dogs shouldn’t overeat homemade dog treats. This is because they should not consume too many carbs or calories. It is important to keep dogs at a healthy weight. A special treat like this dog-safe pumpkin bread should only happen every so often, maybe a couple of times a year.

How to Store Homemade Pumpkin Bread

To store the bread, allow it to cool completely. Wrap the loaf or slices tightly with plastic wrap or place them in a plastic ziptop bag or airtight container. Store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

To freeze, wrap the cooled bread or slices in with a layer of plastic wrap and then either a layer of aluminum foil or place the plastic-wrapped bread in a plastic freezer bag. Thaw it in on the counter or in the fridge.

How long does homemade pumpkin bread last?

Pumpkin bread will last up to 4 days at room temperature, seven days in the fridge, or three months in the freezer.

Can humans eat this pumpkin dog bread?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients in this pumpkin bread for dogs are safe for human consumption. It’s a great bread for people who are watching their sugar intake because it’s naturally sweetened with applesauce and doesn’t contain added sugar.
