Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s something incredibly satisfying about baking treats for your dog. You get to control what goes in them, and your pup gets to enjoy something made with love. And there are so many reasons this recipe will be a favorite:

Wholesome Ingredients – These muffins are made with real, recognizable ingredients. There are no mystery fillers, no additives, just pure goodness.

Easy to Make – It’s as simple as mix, scoop, and bake. No fancy steps or equipment needed, just a muffin pan and some basic kitchen staples.

Simple to Customize – You can easily switch things up depending on your dog’s taste or dietary needs. The base recipe is flexible and forgiving.

Economical – These muffins are far more budget-friendly than store-bought treats, and you can make a whole batch in no time.

Great for Fall – With apples at their peak, this is the perfect seasonal treat to share the cozy flavors of fall with your pup.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Muffins

Every ingredient in these muffins has a purpose, and it’s all about creating a tasty, safe, and satisfying snack for dogs.

  • Apple – The star of the muffins! Adds natural sweetness and fiber.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, nutritious flour that’s easy for dogs to digest.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats – Provide texture, fiber, and a touch of chewiness.
  • Baking Powder – Gives the muffins a little rise and fluff.
  • Cinnamon – A dog-safe spice that adds warm flavor (in small amounts).
  • Peanut Butter – Adds protein, flavor, and richness that dogs go wild for.
  • Egg – Helps bind everything together and adds extra nutrition.
  • Lite Coconut Milk – Keeps the muffins moist and creamy without adding dairy.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Peanut Butter – Do not use any peanut butter that contains xylitol, as it’s toxic to dogs. Always check the label. You can substitute it with xylitol-free almond butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Apple – Feel free to swap with a pear for a different fruity flavor.
  • Coconut Milk – Use lite (low-fat) to avoid excess fat. You can substitute it with unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, or goat milk.
  • Oat Flour – You can make it yourself by blending old-fashioned oats until fine. 1 cup of oats yields about ¾ cup flour.
  • Flour Substitutes – Oat flour can be replaced with rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Avoid using coconut flour—it’s too absorbent and will dry out the muffins.

How to Make Apple Muffins for Dogs

These muffins come together quickly and are super easy to bake. Here’s how:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease mini muffin pans.
  2. Peel and finely chop the apple into small, dog-friendly pieces.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the oat flour, oats, baking powder, and cinnamon.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the chopped apple, peanut butter, and egg.
  5. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  6. Pour in the coconut milk and stir until everything is evenly mixed.
  7. Spoon the batter into the greased pans, filling each cup.
  8. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the muffins are golden and set.
  9. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Want to keep them longer? Pop them into a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and freeze for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these muffins?
