Ingredients and What They Bring to the Donuts
Here’s what you’ll need to make the donuts and each one’s contribution to them:
- Peanut Butter – The main flavor of these donuts and something most dogs love.
- Banana – Adds natural sweetness and moisture while helping bind the dough.
- Whole Wheat Flour – Whole grains are a great source of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
- Rolled Oats – Adds fiber and a hearty texture to the donuts.
- Eggs – Bind the dough and add protein.
- Coconut Oil – Adds healthy fats and helps keep the donuts moist.

If you want iced and decorated dog donuts, you’ll need:
- Peanut Butter – Creamy topping that enhances the peanut butter flavor.
- Dog Treats or Biscuits – For a crunchy topping.
- Bacon – A savory flavor that dogs love.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.
You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter (xylitol-free).
You can substitute banana with applesauce, plain pumpkin puree, or mashed sweet potatoes.
If needed, you can substitute all-purpose flour in equal amounts. You can try oat flour or brown rice flour, but the dough may need adjustments because these flours absorb moisture differently. Start by adding slightly less flour and add more as needed until the dough is thick.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make the donuts. The only special one is a donut pan.
How to Make Peanut Butter Dog Donuts
Making these baked dog donuts is simple and similar to preparing muffin batter. Here’s what to do:
- Mash the banana and melt the coconut oil.
- Into a large bowl, place the flour, oats, peanut butter, mashed banana, coconut oil, and eggs.
- Mix until the dough is well combined.
- Place the dough into donut pans and press the dough into the pan to remove any air gaps.
- Bake at 375°F for about 15 minutes.
- Transfer the baked donuts to a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
- Spread peanut butter on top for the icing. Decorate with any dog-safe toppings.

Recipe Tips for Success
If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or applesauce at a time until it holds together well.
You can pulse the oats in a blender briefly before mixing the dough. That creates a slightly finer texture and helps the donuts hold together better.
How to Store the Donuts
Store the donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

Can people eat these donuts?
Oh yes! These donuts are made with ingredients that are safe for human consumption. There’s no added sugar, so they’re a great option if you’re watching your sugar intake. Give one a try and see if you like it.

Thank you. I can’t wait to make these for my pup. I’m sure she will love them.
Can you substitute a donut pan for an alternative such as a muffin pan?
You could use a muffin pan, just only fill each cup halfway or they will be too thick and won’t be done in the middle.
Wow! These look like a delicious treat that my dog, Henry love! And they seem pretty easy as well to make. My kind of homemade dog treat. I’ll definitely be giving these a try.
I’m sharing them with my dog friends. 😊💖🐶
Don’t have a donut baking tray so put spoonfulls into a mini cupcake tray. Next time will simply roll into balls and press into the cupcake holes to prevent laminating layers coming apart after cooking. They were fairly dry and crumbly but the dogs loved them. Put carob choc drops on top while cooling out of the oven and they melted nicely, then popped a white dog choc drop on top of melted carob choc. Dogs LOVED the topping best, but polished off the treat very happily.
