Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

This recipe is perfect for everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just learning how to make homemade dog treats for the first time, these donuts are simple.

Dog owners, I know how much you care about what you let your furry friend eat. So, you’ll be glad to know that these donuts are a wholesome way to treat your dog with flavors they’ll love. They are made with pumpkin puree and fresh blueberries. These donuts are a delightful snack or reward.

This dog donut recipe combines pumpkin, brown rice flour, and blueberries, providing fiber and antioxidants for your dog’s digestion and immune system.

This means you can skip the store-bought treats with unknown additives and make something from the heart with all-natural ingredients.

With a simple batter and a donut pan, these homemade doggie donuts are ready quickly. Plus, frosting them is as fun as it sounds!

Benefits of Blueberries and Pumpkin for Dogs

Blueberries are a fantastic, dog-friendly superfood! Packed with antioxidants, they help protect your pup’s cells from damage and support a healthy immune system. Blueberries contain vitamins C and K, which promote bone health and support skin and coat health. Plus, their natural sweetness makes them an irresistible addition to dog treats!

Pumpkin is a powerhouse ingredient for dogs, known for its high fiber content that aids digestion and can help with both constipation and diarrhea. It’s also rich in beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, promoting healthy eyesight and immune function. Pumpkin provides a dose of potassium, which supports muscle health. Its smooth texture and natural sweetness make it a doggie favorite in treats and meals!

Ingredients

All the wholesome, dog-safe ingredients in this recipe keep things natural and delicious for your furry friend. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pumpkin Puree – The base and star flavor of the donuts!
  • Fresh Blueberries – A fruity addition dogs love.
  • Brown Rice Flour – A gentle-on-the-tummy, gluten-free flour for dogs.
  • Water and Buttermilk – Keeps the donuts soft and gives them a little lift.
  • Egg – Helps bind the ingredients and provides extra protein.
  • Ground Cinnamon – Adds a subtle, dog-safe spice that brings out the other flavors.
  • Brewer’s Yeast – Great for dogs’ coat health and immune support.
  • Honey – Naturally sweetens the donuts.
  • Yogurt – The base for the frosting, adding creaminess and a little tang that pairs perfectly with blueberries.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, keep a few tips in mind for a delicious (and safe) experience.

  • Avoid pumpkin pie mix – It can contain spices that are toxic to dogs.
  • Frozen blueberries work too – Just thaw and drain them before adding to the batter.
  • DIY Rice Flour – No rice flour? No problem! Blend uncooked brown rice until it has a flour-like consistency. Remember, one cup of rice will make about ¾ cup of flour.

Equipment Needed

You probably have all the kitchen items to make the donuts. The only special one is donut pans. The appliances you’ll need are a hand mixer and food processor.

How to Make Donuts for Dogs

Whipping up these Blueberry Pumpkin Donuts is a breeze and so worth it! Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease and flour two donut pans.
  2. Prepare the batter by mixing all ingredients, except the blueberries, in a large bowl until combined.
  3. Add the blueberries and gently stir to incorporate without squishing them.
  4. Spoon the batter into the donut pans, filling each cavity about ¾ full.
  5. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the donuts cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack.
  6. Prepare the frosting by blending the blueberries, yogurt, and brown rice flour in a food processor until smooth. Frost the cooled donuts. Decorate with dog treats if desired.

Recipe Tips for Success

A few handy tips will help you nail this recipe every time!

  • Don’t overmix the batter, especially once the blueberries are added, to avoid squishing them.
  • Use a piping bag (or plastic bag with a snipped corner) to easily fill the donut pan cavities without making a mess.
  • Let the donuts cool fully before frosting so the blueberry topping doesn’t slide off.
  • Decorate with homemade dog treats. Make some pumpkin dog biscuits.

Serving Size

How many homemade dog donuts should you give your dog at once? One is plenty. If you have a smaller dog (less than 10 pounds), give them less than one donut.

These donuts are large so be mindful of how much you give to your dog.

Dogs shouldn’t overeat. They should not consume too many calories or carbohydrates. It is important to keep dogs at a healthy weight.

Also, start with small amounts when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions.

How to Store the Donuts and How Long They Last

Once you’ve whipped up these donuts, here’s how to keep them fresh:

Storing: Store these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Freezing: You can freeze unfrosted donuts in a sealed container for up to three months. Simply thaw them in the fridge overnight and frost before serving.

Can people eat these donuts?

Yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re great for folks who are watching their sugar intake. Give one a try and you may like it.
