Disclaimer

Please note that I am not a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. Before starting your dog on homemade food, consult with your veterinarian to ensure it meets their specific dietary needs. This recipe is nutritious and safe but is not intended to be a complete meal replacement. It lacks specific essential vitamins and nutrients that dogs require for a balanced diet.

Transitioning to homemade food will likely necessitate additional nutrient supplements. Always consult your veterinarian to determine the appropriate foods and supplements for your dog’s breed, weight, age, and health requirements.

Ingredients

This stew is made with a handful of simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Chicken Breasts: Lean protein that’s gentle on your dog’s stomach and packed with essential nutrients.
  • Chicken Broth or Stock: The cooking liquid for the stew.
  • Tapioca Pearls: A great thickening agent that also adds a unique texture.
  • Green Beans: Provide fiber and vitamins for digestive health.
  • Carrots: Naturally sweet and full of beta-carotene and vitamin A.
  • Spinach: Adds a boost of iron and other essential nutrients to the mix.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When choosing chicken broth, ensure it’s free of onions and garlic. Homemade bone broth is always the best option. You can boil chicken with bones in water and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar until it’s rich and flavorful.

Opt for no-salt canned vegetables to avoid extra sodium in your dog’s meal.

Fresh or frozen vegetables can replace canned ones if you prefer a less processed option.

Feel free to substitute the chicken with beef, turkey, or lamb if your pup enjoys variety.

Serving Size

Serving sizes depend on your dog’s size, activity level, and breed. A general guideline is 1 cup of food for every 20 pounds of body weight. Adjust as needed based on your dog’s needs.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat Leftovers

  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating: Thaw frozen portions in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat to room temperature or slightly warm. Do not serve it hot to avoid burning your dog’s mouth.

I’ve got thirty-four giant breed dogs—most of them tipping the scales over 100 pounds—and I love spoiling them. But after seeing these recipes, they might have to share! Everything looks so good I’m tempted to eat first and let the dogs fight over the leftovers—sorry, pups! 🐾
