Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

When it comes to homemade dog treats, it’s hard to beat something this easy and nutritious.

They’re gluten-free. Brown rice flour is naturally gluten-free, making these a great option for dogs with wheat sensitivities or allergies.

They’re made with simple, wholesome ingredients. No mystery additives here, just a few pantry staples you probably already have on hand.

The dough is easy to roll and cut. It’s soft, smooth, and perfect for your favorite cookie cutters.

The texture is crunchy and satisfying. These treats bake up crisp and firm, which dogs love and helps them last a little longer in the treat jar.

Ingredients

You only need a few easy-to-find ingredients to whip up a batch of these homemade goodies. Here’s what goes into them and what each one brings to the recipe:

  • Brown rice flour – The star of the treats!
  • Applesauce – Adds moisture, fiber, and a touch of natural sweetness.
  • Peanut butter – Brings in healthy fats, protein, and delicious flavor dogs can’t resist.
  • Egg – Acts as a binder and adds a boost of protein.
  • Water – Helps bring the dough together and gives you control over the consistency.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is flexible and easy to adapt based on what you have on hand, just keep these notes in mind:

Make sure your peanut butter is xylitol-free. This artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs. Always double-check the label!

You can swap out the applesauce for mashed banana or plain pumpkin puree if your dog prefers a different flavor.

If you don’t have brown rice flour, you can make your own by blending uncooked brown rice in a blender or food processor until it reaches a flour-like consistency.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these treats. You can use any cookie cutter of your choice but cute cookie cutters for dog treats give these treats a fun look.

How to Make Dog Treats with Brown Rice Flour

The steps are super straightforward, and they’re quick to make. You’ll have a batch of crunchy homemade treats ready in no time!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Place the brown rice flour, applesauce, peanut butter, and egg in a bowl. Stir until well combined.
  3. Slowly add water, a little at a time, until the dough becomes rollable and holds together well.
  4. Place it between two sheets of parchment paper and roll to about ⅓-inch thick.
  5. Use cookie cutters to cut out treats. Re-roll scraps and continue until all dough is used.
  6. Place the cutouts on your prepared baking sheet and bake for 12 to 16 minutes, until golden and crisp.
  7. Let the treats cool on a wire rack before serving or storing.

Serving Size

Dog treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to keep their diet balanced and stay at a healthy weight. If you’re unsure about how many treats are right for your dog, your vet can help you decide what’s best.

If your pup hasn’t tried any of the ingredients before, start with a small portion to watch for sensitivities.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Once baked and cooled, store your treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Want to keep some on hand for later? Freeze them for up to 3 months! Just thaw at room temperature before serving, or give them as a frozen treat for a cool snack on warm days.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes! These are made with real, simple ingredients that are safe for humans too. They’re not sweet like human cookies, but if you’re looking for a gluten-free, low-sugar snack, they’re worth a taste. Give one a try and you might be surprised!
