Benefits of Brown Rice for Dogs

If your dog struggles with gluten intolerance, brown rice is a wonderful ingredient to use in baked treats. There are lots of health benefits of brown rice for your furry friends.

Brown rice is an easily digestible carbohydrate with fiber from the grain’s bran and germ. It aids in a dog’s bowel movement and helps with the growth of good bacteria in the intestines.

It’s also a good source of protein. Yes, even plants of protein, and rice has some.

It’s not an empty carbohydrate. Brown rice has vitamins B, D, E, and K.

It’s also a fantastic source of essential minerals including calcium, folic acid, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, and zinc.

Brown rice also benefits your dog at the cellular level. The antioxidants in brown rice fight free radicals that try to damage your dog’s cells.

Benefits of Peanut Butter for Dogs

Peanut butter is high in protein which is essential to a dog’s diet. It helps with building and repairing muscle.

Peanut butter has healthy fats that are important for a dog’s skin, maintaining it and improving dry coats or irritated skin.

Peanut butter is a good source of nutrients including magnesium for helping cells metabolize B complex vitamins and folic acid for cell growth.

Recipe Ingredients

The entire ingredient list, quantities of each, and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I want to share a bit more information about the ingredients I used in the best gluten-free dog treats you’ll ever make.

Here’s a list of what you need for this wheat-free dog treats recipe. You can find everything in regular grocery stores. If you want to make organic dog treats, make sure you use organic ingredients.

  • Brown Rice Flour – One of the best wheat-free flours for dog treats.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – Use natural peanut butter without added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
  • Applesauce – Provides moisture to the dough and is a great source of vitamin C.
  • Egg – Binds the dough and is also a great source of protein.
  • Water – To add moisture for holding the dough together.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When you make this easy recipe for gluten-free dog treats, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

Use unsweetened natural peanut butter. Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol because it is toxic to dogs.

You can substitute almond butter or SunButter (sunflower seed butter) for the peanut butter. Just make sure it is unsweetened and does not contain xylitol.

You can make your own brown rice flour by placing uncooked brown rice in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.

If you use all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour, the end results may vary due to the difference in the flour. They will not be gluten-free if using flour made from wheat.

It’s best if you use rice flour in this homemade dog treat recipe so that they come out perfectly the first time.

Other Gluten-Free Flour for Dogs

You can find these gluten-free flours at health food stores or grocery stores. Look for them in the baking aisle or health foods section of the store.

  • Almond Flour – adds more calories and fat.
  • Chickpea Flour aka Garbanzo Bean Flour – is denser and may need to be mixed with another flour.
  • Coconut Flour – will have to add more water to the dough.
  • Quinoa Flour – is best for treats baked in a silicone mold and not rolled and cut.
  • Oat Flour – is the best substitute for brown rice flour.

Important note: If your dog is on a grain-free diet, you will need to use almond, chickpea, coconut, quinoa, or other dog-safe grain-free flour to make grain-free dog treats. Oats and rice are grains.

Serving Size

How many homemade dog treats should you give to your canine companions? That depends on what else they ate that day because you need to consider their entire calorie intake. Being mindful of a dog’s food consumption is just as important as it is with a human family member.

It also depends on the size of your dog. Small dogs need fewer calories than larger dogs. Maintaining a dog’s healthy weight is important so keep that in mind when feeding your dog treats in addition to their regular food.

Dogs also shouldn’t eat too many carbs, including healthy homemade dog treats with applesauce and brown rice flour. For this reason, I suggest only giving your pup one treat per day. Or perhaps two on special days.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these gluten-free dog cookies. You can use cookie cutter shapes of your choice but cute cookie cutters like paw or bone-shaped cookie cutters give these treats a fun look.

How to Store

Store baked dog treats at room temperature in an airtight container for dog treats. A dog treat cookie jar is a good idea so they are not mistaken for human cookies. Here are some cute ones on Amazon:

  • Metal Farmhouse Style Dog Treats Jar
  • Rae Dunn Good Dog Ceramic Dog Treats Canister
  • Clear Plastic Paw Print Air-tight Container

How long do homemade baked dog treats last?

These homemade gluten-free dog treats will last anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks when stored in a sealed container. It also depends on how many dogs you have, how many treats you give them, and how often.

For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months.

Can humans eat these gluten free treats for dogs?

They sure can! Everything in these dog treats is safe for human consumption. However, I doubt folks would like them since they are not sweet.
