Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s something so satisfying about making treats just for your dog. You get to control exactly what goes in, and they get a snack made with love. There are so many reasons this recipe will be a favorite:

Wholesome Ingredients – No weird preservatives or fillers here. Just real, dog-friendly ingredients you can trust.

Easy to Make – Boil the sweet potato, mash it, mix in the rest, and bake. That’s it! No fancy steps required.

Simple to Customize – You can easily switch up the ingredients to suit your dog’s tastes or dietary needs.

Economical – Skip the overpriced store-bought treats. This recipe is budget-friendly and makes plenty of goodies to go around.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

This recipe uses only 4 simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need

  • Low-Fat Cottage Cheese – Adds protein, calcium, and is the star of the treats.
  • Sweet Potato – A naturally sweet and fiber-rich veggie that dogs love.
  • Egg – Helps bind everything together and adds a little protein boost.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, easy-to-digest flour that provides structure and fiber.

A Few Notes About Ingredients and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Cottage cheese – Be sure to use low-fat cottage cheese. High-fat dairy can cause weight gain and may increase the risk of pancreatitis in dogs.
  • Sweet potato – You can use butternut squash or plain pumpkin puree instead. Just be sure it’s unsweetened and unseasoned.
  • Oat flour – You can make your own by placing old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender and grinding until fine. 1 cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • Flour substitutions – Rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour will work. Avoid using just whole wheat flour because it’s too dense. And skip coconut flour, as it absorbs too much moisture and will dry out the dough.

Equipment Needed

You don’t need any fancy equipment to make these treats. Just the basics and some baking molds. You can use any shape, but bone-shaped silicone molds make the treats extra cute.

How To Make Cottage Cheese Dog Treats

These sweet potato cottage cheese dog treats come together in just a few simple steps. Here’s what to do:

    1. Peel and cut the sweet potato into cubes.
    2. Place the cubes in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes or until fork-tender.
    3. Drain and let cool completely, then mash the sweet potato with a fork, potato masher, or mixer.
    4. Preheat your oven to 350°F and place your silicone molds on a baking sheet for stability.
    5. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of mashed sweet potato with the cottage cheese, egg, and oat flour. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
    6. Fill the silicone molds with the dough, pressing it in firmly.
    7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until set.
    8. Let the treats cool completely before removing them from the molds.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

Want to keep them longer? Freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic bag for up to 3 months. Just thaw before serving.

    Can people eat these treats?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. They’re not seasoned like people snacks, but if you’re curious, go ahead and give one a try.
