From the wild plant to the varieties of different types of mustard condiment, there are a ton of different kinds of mustard out there. Depending on how much your dog eats and which variety, it could be very dangerous for them.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about dogs and mustard.

Can Dogs Have Mustard

No, dog should not have mustard. Mustard is made from mustard seeds, and these seeds have glucusinolates, which is toxic to dogs. These seeds can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and other digestion issues.

Can Dogs Eat Mustard Greens

curly mustard greens

Mustard greens are safe for dogs to eat. These leafy greens don’t have mustard seeds in them, which makes them safer for dogs.

In fact, they are healthy for dogs. They are a good source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Even so, watch out how much your dog eats. Too much fiber – even healthy fiber – could give your dog loose stools.

Can Dogs Eat Raw Mustard Greens

No, dogs should not eat raw mustard greens. A dog’s body isn’t built to digest raw vegetables. It will upset their stomach if they eat too many raw veggies.

Can Dogs Eat Cooked Mustard Greens

Yes, dogs can safely eat cooked mustard greens. The best way to prepare mustard greens for dogs is to steam it. This softens the leaves and makes them easier for your dog to digest.

Can Dogs Eat Spider Mustard

Spider mustard is also known as Mizuna. It’s a Japanese mustard green. Since it’s a leafy green, dogs can safely eat them. Just be sure to steam them and not give them to your pet raw.

Can Dogs Eat Wild Mustard

I’m not talking about mustard greens this time. Sinapis arvensis, the charlock mustard, field mustard, wild mustard or charlock, is an annual or winter annual plant of the genus Sinapis in the family Brassicaceae.

So, is field mustard safe for dogs?

No, it is not safe for dogs. Charlock contains Isothiocyanates  which will irritate your dog’s digestive track and can even be fatal if fed in large doses.

Can Dogs Eat Mustard Oil

Mustard oil is actually banned in the United States for human consumption because of the toxicity of euric acid. For this reason, keep it away from your dog too.

Can Dogs Eat Mustard Seeds

Absolutely not. Do not let your dog eat mustard seeds. Keep them away from any foods that were prepared with mustard seeds- this includes prepared mustard as a condiment.

Can Dogs Eat Mustard Powder

Mustard powder can be used to induce vomiting in dogs. For this reason, you should keep it away from your pet. If they accidentally get into mustard powder (or eat anything with mustard powder on it) they might vomit or at least feel queasy.

Can Dogs Eat Prepared Mustard

If the prepared mustard was made from mustard seed (as almost all are), then dogs should not eat it.

If your dog eats a hot dog that had a little bit of mustard on it, just keep on eye on them. They might vomit and have an upset stomach, but they should be ok.

As always, please call your veterinarian if your pet experiences signs of severe distress such as lethargy or extreme stomach pain.

Can Dogs Eat Chinese Hot Mustard

Dogs should not eat hot mustard. Not only because it’s made with mustard seeds, but also because it has a spicy flavor. Spicy foods are not good for dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Dijon Mustard

Dijon mustard is not the same as French mustard, but dogs should stay away from both kinds. Dijon is dark yellow with a taste in between English and French mustard. It’s made with mustard seeds and white wine or wine vingar.

Since it is made from mustard seeds, dogs should not eat dijon mustard.

Can Dogs Eat French Mustard

French mustard has a smooth taste that lots of fans of gourmet foods love. Dogs can not eat French mustard because it’s made with mustard seeds.

Can Dogs Eat Honey Mustard

Even though honey is soothing to dogs, do not let your dog eat honey mustard. Eating a small amount of honey mustard might not affect your dog, but eating a large amount could make your dog very sick.

Can Dogs Eat Horseradish Mustard

Dogs should never eat horseradish mustard. Not only does it have mustard seed in it, but it’s made with a very spicy horseradish that can irritate their stomach.

Can Dogs Spicy Brown Mustard

No, dogs can not eat spicy brown mustard. The spices that give it that kick could be harmful to your pet’s stomach.

If you are wondering “can dogs eat brown mustard,” the answer is still no. Brown mustard and spicy brown mustard are basically the same thing.

Can Dogs Eat Wholegrain Mustard

Wholegrain mustard is a condiment that has visible mustard seeds. This should be a visual reminder to keep it away from your pup.

Can Dogs Eat Yellow Mustard

Dogs should not eat yellow mustard either. If your dog eats a small amount of yellow mustard, just keep an eye on them and watch out for any stomach pains or diarrhea.

Final Thoughts

With mustard, it’s all about how much your dog eats. It’s always best to be more safe than sorry. Keep all types of prepared mustard away from your dog since mustard seed isn’t safe for them to eat.

Watch out for vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. If you notice these symptoms and you know your dog ate mustard, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
