Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

There’s something extra special about making your dog a treat from scratch and these beef broth biscuits are no exception! They smell delicious, look adorable, and have just the right crunch.

They’re easy to make. No complicated steps here. Just mix, roll, cut, and bake!

They’re made with wholesome ingredients. No preservatives or artificial ingredients, just a few pantry staples that are safe and healthy for dogs.

Dogs love the meaty flavor. The beef broth gives these treats a rich aroma and taste your dog will instantly recognize (and beg for!).

Perfect for picky eaters. The beefy peanut butter combo is a surefire win with even the most selective pups.

They’re fun to cut into cute shapes. Grab your favorite dog bone cookie cutters and have fun baking!

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make these savory treats for your pup:

  • Beef Broth – Adds a rich, meaty flavor that dogs go crazy for. Be sure to use dog-safe broth.
  • Peanut Butter – Gives the treats an extra yummy flavor and healthy fats.
  • Egg – Acts as a binder to hold everything together.
  • Coconut Oil – Helps with texture and adds moisture.
  • Oat Flour – A gluten-free flour that’s gentle on doggy tummies.
  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats – Adds some chewy texture and extra fiber.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

You can tweak this recipe to fit your dog’s dietary needs or preferences.

  • Avoid xylitol. Make sure the peanut butter is xylitol-free because this sweetener is highly toxic to dogs.
  • Nut butter options. Substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter, as long as they’re xylitol-free.
  • Broth caution. Do not use beef broth that contains onion or garlic. Look for broth made for dogs or make your own homemade beef broth.
  • Stock for extra flavor. Use beef stock or reduce broth to intensify the flavor.
  • Make your own flour. Oat and brown rice flours are easy to make by blending oats or rice until powdery.
  • Other flour options. You can also use all-purpose or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat. You may need to adjust the liquids depending on the flour’s absorbency.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these treats. You can use any cookie cutter of your choice, but cookie cutters for dog treats give these treats a fun look.

How to Make Beef Broth Dog Treats

These beefy biscuits come together in a few easy steps. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix the melted coconut oil, egg, beef broth, and peanut butter until smooth.
  3. Add oat flour and rolled oats. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Lightly flour a surface and roll out the dough to ¼ to ½-inch thickness.
  5. Use a cookie cutter to cut out treats and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Gather the scraps, roll them out again, and repeat until all the dough is used.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the treats are set and lightly golden.
  8. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Serving Size

Treats like these should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. If your dog hasn’t tried any of the ingredients before, start with a small piece to ensure they don’t have an adverse reaction. When in doubt, consult your vet for the right portion size based on your pup’s needs.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag. They’ll keep for up to 4 months. Just thaw before serving or give frozen as a crunchy treat!

Can people eat these treats?

Yes! All the ingredients are human-safe. If you’re into savory, low-sugar snacks, give one a try. They’re kind of like a bland cracker with a peanut butter twist.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil melted
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup Beef Broth unsalted or low-sodium without onions or garlic
  • ½ cup Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 2 cups Oat Flour
  • ¼ cup Old-fashioned Rolled Oats

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together the melted coconut oil, egg, beef broth, and peanut butter.
  • Add oat flour and oats and combine well until a dough forms.
  • With a rolling pin, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ to ½ inch thickness, according to your preference.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut out the dog treats and place them on a non-stick baking sheet or use parchment paper to cover the baking sheet.
  • You can gather the dough scraps, press them together, roll it out, and cut out treats until all the dough is used.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Transfer the baked treats to a wire rack to cool to room temperature.

Notes

Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, a sweetener toxic to dogs.
You can find dog-safe beef broth at pet stores on online. Or use homemade.
If you don’t have oat flour, you can make it by placing uncooked old-fashioned oats in a blender or food processor and blending until it reaches a flour consistency.
For beefier flavor, use concentrated beef broth. Just cook 1 cup of beef broth over medium heat until it is reduced to ½ cup (which pretty much makes beef stock).

I made the beef biscuits as directed, but I ground my own oatmeal not guide to flour consistency and the biscuits came out crumbly. How can I make them so they stay solid, dry and crunchy.

The oats need to be ground until they have the consistency of flour. Or substitute the oat flour with all-purpose flour.

You could add some finely chopped meat scraps (lean meat), about 1/2 cup. The treats should be stored in an airtight container. Without meat scraps they can be stored at room temperature. If you add meat then they will need to stored in the refrigerator. They’ll be good for up to 5 days. Or freeze them for up to 4 months.

Thanks for the recipe. How long do the biscuits last out of the fridge, and in the fridge?

They will last up to 5 days when stored at room temperature in a sealed container. They will last a few more days in the fridge.

Is it to leave out peanut butter? How much peas and grated carrots could I add? My dog is crazy about them? Is is also possible to use whole wheat flour? Thank you for a good base recipe!

Leaving out the peanut butter will cause the dough to be too dry. You can substitute it with almond butter or sesame seed butter.
You could add up to ½ cup of chopped peas and grated carrots (combined, not of each).
You can substitute a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.

Hi! I tried your Beef and cheesy treats last night. Both by the recipe. While I believe they’re still edible, I had a lot of trouble getting them to cook to a crunchy consistency. I had to cook the cheesy about 5-8 minutes past the 25 max given and I think they’re crunchy (without tasting them!). But the beef/pb…I cooked them 10-15 minutes longer and they’re still not crunchy. They ‘re fairly soft. Any ideas?
BTW, I’ve been making cutout cookies (for humans) for 40 years, so I believe the consistency of the dough was fairly accurate.

I’m not sure why the treats did not turn out crunchy for you. There are lots of variables. It could be oven temperature, as your oven isn’t as hot as it is set for. Or an ingredient you used is fattier.

Ok, thx. I think I’ll try a batch with 1/3c pb instead of the 1/2c and leave everything else alone!

How long would I dehydrate these for so they last longer? I’m thinking 2 hours at 165° because they don’t have a ton of moisture.
    Feedback please😁
    Thank you

Yes, dehydrating the baked treats at 165°F for about 2 hours should work.

Whole wheat is too dense by itself. You can substitute the oat flour with a 50/50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat.
