The Best Things About These Banana Treats for Dogs
There are lots of things I love about these dog-safe treats. Not only are they super-easy to make, but they use ingredients that you probably already have around the house.
These custom dog treats are made with whole ingredients that will fuel your dog with the nutrition they need. There aren’t any empty calories in these biscuits! In fact, I’ll share the nutrition information about these cute dog treats later on in this post.
Banana dog treats are some of the best healthy dog treats you can make. You know your dog’s health the best – so alter the recipe to fit their dietary needs.
I might be biased, but these are some of the best dairy-free dog treats I have ever made. As they baked, my dogs could smell them and started to pace around the kitchen.
The recipe for the best crunchy dog treats is just a little further below. First, here’s more about the ingredients and why I chose to use them.
Benefits of Bananas
I used bananas in this homemade dog treats recipe because it adds a touch of sweetness and a bunch of nutrition.
Not only are bananas an excellent source of potassium and vitamin C (which helps their immune system) but they are rich in magnesium too. Magnesium is really important because it helps you dog absorb other vitamins efficiently and helps them grow strong bones.
Benefits of Oatmeal
Did you know that oatmeal has lots of healthy nutrients? That’s why oatmeal treats for dogs are so good for them!
The most obvious benefit is that oats are an alternative to wheat for dogs that are sensitive or gluten intolerant.
Beyond that, it also has vitamin B which helps your pet maintain a healthy coat. It’s also a good source of omega-6 fatty acids that helps keep a dog’s skin strong and healthy.
The soluble fiber in rolled oats helps dogs regulate their blood glucose levels. It also helps your pup if they are having irregular bowel movements – that fiber will keep them regular for sure!
Banana Dog Treats Recipe Ingredients
The entire list of ingredients and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some extra information about the ingredients I used in these cookie dog treats.
Here’s a list of what you need. Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic dog treats.
- Bananas – Since you will be mashing the bananas in the batter, try to use ones that are really ripe.
- Oatmeal – Use old-fashioned or rolled oats. If you use quick-cooking oats, the treats won’t be as crispy.
- Oat Flour – You can buy oat flour or make your own.
- Egg – The egg binds the dough and gives the treats a little boost of protein.
- Coconut Oil – This is really healthy for your dog, giving them the healthy fats they need.
- Cinnamon – If you don’t have cinnamon, leave it out. Do not substitute with allspice or nutmeg since nutmeg is toxic to dogs.
Ingredient Notes
When you make this easy dog treats recipe, here are a few more notes to keep in mind.
To make your own oat flour, add 3 cups of rolled oats to a blender or food processor. Blend until it has a powder consistency.
Old fashioned oats and rolled oats are the same. So you can get either type of oatmeal to make the treats.
You can use quick-cooking oats but the treats will be moister and softer.
Do not use instant or steel-cut oats for this recipe.
Serving Size
How many homemade dog treats should you give your dog at once? That depends on what else they ate that day. This might be a healthier treat, but it is still a treat.
Treats should be a sometimes food, not their main source of calories.
Dogs shouldn’t overeat too many carbs – even healthy ones from bananas and oatmeal. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat per day.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make homemade dog treats with bananas. You can use any regular cookie cutters but dog-shaped ones give these treats a fun look.

- Mixing Bowl
- Hand Mixer
- Mixing Spoon
- Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters for Dog Treats or Custom Dog Treat Cutters
- Nonstick Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper or Silicone Baking Mat (if using an aluminum baking sheet)

How to Store Baked Banana Dog Treats
Store the baked banana treats in a container for dog treats. A dog treat jar is best so they are not mistaken for human treats. Here are some cute ones on Amazon:

- Clear Plastic Paw Print Air-tight Container
Can humans eat these dog banana cookies?
Yep, they sure can! All the ingredients in these banana treats for dogs are safe for human consumption. Since they are not sweet, folks probably won’t like them. I suggest making Banana Oatmeal Cookies for people.

I’ve been trying to find a good recipe for my dog, but I think they’re not supposed to have cinnamon? I believe it upsets their stomachs
Renee says
Cinnamon is a safe spice (non-toxic) to dogs. Large quantities can irritate their mouth or stomach. These treats have a really small amount which is fine and offers some health benefits.
Teagen says
Omg Same!! I had the same question. Until I found out yes that they can have cinnamon! Other then that I can’t wait to see my dogs reactions!
Julie says
How long do these last for? Do they need to be stored in the fridge? Eager to try!
Renee says
The treats do not need to be stored in the refrigerator. If stored in an airtight container at room temperature, they should last for 2 to 3 weeks.
Mary Werner says
I live in a high humidity part of the US, and got tired of my treats or my customers treats molding on their countertops. So…my simple rule of thumb is if you are in a HIGH HUMIDITY area, do not leave them on the counter top, they will mold fast. Freeze them, take out what you need for the following day and refrigerate them. Overall, you can refrigerate up to 4 days, freeze up to 6 months (all in air tight containers).

Renee Dobbs says
Oh yes!

My dog loves these treats. I leave them on top rack of oven after I turn the oven off for extra crunch. I put them in a sealed plastic container in the freezer. Bonus: The whole house smells amazing!
Renee says
Fantastic! I’m so glad your dog enjoys the treats. Thanks for the great tip for making them extra crunchy!
Paige bays says
Does baking the oats do the same as normal preparation for the oats? I know oats have to be cooked before dogs can have them.
Renee Dobbs says
Yes, baking is one way of cooking oats.
Pam Landers says
Love your recipes. May I ask how you were able to put the name of your company on the treat? They are precious…and no doubt tasty.

Renee Dobbs says
I got the custom cookie cutter on Etsy. The shop I got them from no longer makes them but there are others that do. Just go to Etsy and search for custom cookie cutters.
Judy Kulka says
If your dog is allergic to eggs, you can substitute 1/4 cup of applesauce per egg.
Judy Kulka says
Is this 130 calories per treat?
Renee Dobbs says
Yes, if you make 16 treats with the dough.
Melanie says
I have them in the oven now!! My Delta is allergic to peanut butter, beef and chicken!! It’s so hard to find a recipe that doesn’t have any of those ingredients! Thank you!
Randy says
My dough is too dry and not sticking together. What can I add to make the flour mixture more of a dough ?
Renee Dobbs says
You can add more mashed banana or a liquid such as coconut milk or unsweetened almond milk.
